Incubator firm failure or graduation?: The role of university linkages

One of the theoretically important factors for incubator firm performance is the strength of their linkages to the research university sponsoring the technology incubator. Herein, we focus on two types of university linkages to the sponsoring institution: a license obtained from the university and a link to university faculty, while controlling for incubator firm linkages to non-sponsoring research universities, among other factors. We propose that a university link to the sponsoring institution reduces the probability of new venture failure and, at the same time, retards timely graduation. Further, we suggest that these effects are more pronounced the stronger the university link. Due to the difficulty of obtaining fine-grained longitudinal data, the incubation literature is characterized by a dearth of studies focusing on incubator firm differential performance. We attempt to take a first step towards closing this gap by testing these hypotheses through following 79 start-up firms incubated in the Advanced Technology Development Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology over the 6-year period between 1998 and 2003. We find broad support for the hypotheses advanced.     

Does technological diversification promote innovation?: An empirical analysis for European firms

This paper analyses the impact of technological diversity on innovative activity at the firm level. The empirical study on a panel of European R&D active companies shows that both R&D intensity and patents increase with the degree of technological diversification of the firm. Possible explanations are that, on the one hand, a firm that diversifies its technology can receive more spillovers from other (related) technological fields. On the other hand, diversification can reduce the risk from technological investments and it creates incentives to spend more on R&D. The paper provides empirical evidence relevant to the diversity-specialization innovation debate.

福建客家女作家何英的《抚摸岁月》是一部反映客家社会风土人情的长篇小说。以“双性同体”理论为主线, 从女性主义视角剖析《抚摸岁月》中的母女形象双性同体人格形成的过程,透视母女两人内心的女性气质和男性气质,描述在女性意识觉醒的作用下双性人格从母亲到女儿身上的发展变化及两性人格特征在女儿身上的和谐统一,为深入剖析《抚摸岁月》中的女性形象提供新的途径。     

编目数据格式简化的标准化

互联网时代的编目工作发生了根本性的改变,书目数据不再强调过分的细节描速,而是强调受控主题和名称检索点.因此,在满足用户需求的前提下,采用介于国家级记录的最高与最低标准之间的编目等级,即核心记录,来简化编目数据格式,并制定相应的标准,可降低编目成本,提高编目效率,编目工作的重心也随之转移到对书目数据检索点的规范控制工作中.     

Do teacher characteristics matter? New results on the effects of teacher preparation on student achievement

Research fairly consistently demonstrates that teachers are an important measurable factor in student learning, yet few teacher characteristics are shown to be consistently related to student achievement. Using a state administrative dataset that matches individual students to their teachers over time, I find that math teachers’ undergraduate performance, as measured by GPA (overall, math, and math education) and course hours (math and math education), is predictive of 5th grade math achievement. The effects of the teacher characteristics are mediated by years of experience and vary according to student types.     

Analyzing the factors that influence persistence rates in STEM field,majors: Introduction to the symposium

To improve our understanding of the factors that influence persistence rates in STEM field majors, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provided a grant to the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute in 2007 to study the question. The five papers in the symposium represent the output of the project. This introduction explains the motivation for undertaking the study, describes the questions the researchers asked and the data bases they used in their studies, summarizes their findings, and suggests directions for future research.
