In this article, the authors assess the evidence related to various instructional styles for teaching reading to children with learning disabilities. Results of the literature review indicate that whole language and direct instruction are the two major approaches to teaching reading. Whole language has proven successful for many students with learning disabilities. In addition, direct instruction provides teachers with the ability to steer, guide, and evaluate student progress frequently. However, little research exists regarding the effectiveness of direct versus whole language instruction. The authors also review and discuss neurological and psychological aspects of the development of reading skills and the need for further research.  相似文献

This report on the Alberta Student Assessment Study describes the context, methodology, and emergent themes. It outlines the purposes and uses of assessment according to the various stakeholder groups. Using both qualitative and quantitative data from students and parents, as well as educators at all levels, there were six areas or themes that emerged for further exploration: politics of assessment, decision making, teacher learning, communication and relationships, instructional leadership, and fairness and equity.  相似文献

A new threat has arisen for which teachers, administrators, and parents admit they are poorly prepared. Cyberbullying—electronic forms of peer harassment—is becoming increasingly prevalent and often originates beyond the legal reach of the school. This presentation describes how cyberbullying differs from other forms of mistreatment, cites examples of Internet intimidation, identifies procedures for responding to electronic threats, explores implications for teachers and parents, recommends questions for initial research, and presents a poll for schools to use in assessing student experience with cyberbullying.  相似文献

Several frameworks and models have been developed to conceptualize teaching quality. Despite their merits, the field seems to be lacking a common language and structure in how teaching quality is delineated. This special issue argues that progress can be made in this respect by fostering focused discussions and collaborations among scholars working on teaching quality. In this introductory paper, we first consider some initial steps made to examine teaching quality more collectively, discuss the importance of intensifying this effort, identify related challenges, and consider ideas for addressing them. Then, we outline a format for collaboration which brings developers together to discuss and reflect upon their work and present a model which can provide a platform for such focused discussions. The approach undertaken in this special issue to facilitate collaborative discussions among three groups of scholars is presented, alongside the guiding questions and the empirical data considered in the following papers.  相似文献

Abstract

This article explores the paradox of “race” and U.S. education reform in the 21st century. I consider how the invisible ontology of race and its entangled relationship with class divert our attention from economic inequality and undermine policies intended to redress racial inequality in schools.
