“Stop sending your kids across our border:” Discursively constructing the unaccompanied youth migrant

The recent migration of 65,000 children across the southwestern border, coupled with allegations of abuse by the U.S. Border Patrol, enables the investigation of an overlooked immigrant category: the unaccompanied youth migrant. Analyzing audience responses to news reports of the abuse, we find that established disparaging immigrant tropes apply, describing the children as an economic burden, disease carriers, and offspring of irresponsible families. We uncover two new themes: Youth migrants are channels whereby criminals may infiltrate the U.S., and manipulate legal authorities to remain in the U.S. Finally, we demonstrate how global compassion is strategically deployed to qualify harsh retaliatory measures.     

2000-2004年间我国电视体育节目收视状况的解析与思考

运用文献资料、比较研究等方法,对2000-2004年间我国体育节目收视状况进行了研究。2000-2004年间体育节目年播出量比较稳定,但不同年份体育节目供求关系很不平衡。大型体育赛事对体育节目收视有巨大的拉动作用,受大型体育赛事周期性举办的影响,体育节目收视呈周期性波动特征。重点城市体育节目收视也呈周期性波动特征,且波动规律和全国市场波动规律基本一致,重点城市体育节目供求关系与全国体育节目供求关系也相近。发达地区体育节目收视状况一般优于不发达地区,体育节目收视状况与城市现代化程度在一定程度上呈正相关,但这种关联很不稳定,说明影响体育节目收视的因素很复杂,有待于进一步研究。     

Comprehending orthography

A new perspective is needed on the great debate in literacy instruction. Rather than the current dichotomy between whole language and phonics, we propose an approach that integrates comprehension and decoding into a system designed around the principles of student-centered, authentic instruction in a socially engaging context. This approach reflects the research on meta-cognitive and social-constructive literacy. We discuss concepts and practices for realizing these principles in programs for students in US schools whose native language is English and those for whom Spanish is the language of the home. We consider the advantages of bilingual programs that promote awareness of the function of print codes within and across languages.

Measuring the value of theatre for Tyneside audiences

What values do theatre and dance hold for audience members? And how do these values differ between subsidised, amateur, and commercial performance? This paper addresses these questions through a survey of over 1800 spectators for theatre and dance in Tyneside in northeastern England, as well as a parallel set of focus groups, in the spring of 2014. These methods, which are designed for comprehensiveness and comparability, are being used across Europe by the Project on European Theatre Systems, a working group of theatre sociologists. Our research showed two sets of values which performances achieved; one was a common measure of performance quality, while the other described the values particular to subsidised work. This allows us to articulate both the general value of the arts and the particular values which subsidy (attempts to) facilitate. This has implications for both understandings of cultural value and for cultural policy, as the distinction between the two groups was not clean. We also found that amateur theatre participated in the same value system, but with an increased emphasis on loyalty and community cohesion. The paper concludes a methodological reflection on the use of quantitative methods in theatre studies.

Gamification of a Mobile Applications Lecture in a Pharmacy Course

Abstract

This report describes a librarian’s development of an interactive and competitive trivia game using Poll Everywhere, an audience response system software. The trivia game was implemented during a live lecture session on drug information mobile applications taught to first-year pharmacy students. To add a fun and engaging reference for students, the librarian decided to model the game after HQ, a free trivia gaming app. Development of the session, student response, changes to future iterations, and lessons learned by the librarian are described.
