Understanding Greek Primary School Children's Comprehension of Sun Exposure

The purpose of this study was to assess Greek primary (1st to 6th grade) school children's understanding of sun exposure during summer vacation. Our results show that children know the damaging effects of long time exposure and the precautions that should be taken during sun bathing (sun glasses, hat, umbrella, sunscreen, etc). Nevertheless, they do not seem to avoid being exposed between 12.00 A.M. and 15.00 P.M., which is the most dangerous time. The socioeconomic status of father has no effect on the attitude of children towards taking protection measures when exposed to the sun, however, the educational status of the mother appears to influence children's reported knowledge and behaviour. Place of residence (urban or rural areas) and gender does not influence their knowledge on the sun's damaging effects and the precautions they should take. Finally, as children grow older they seem to gradually reduce the protective measures they take.     

Science Letters：IGFBP7 plays a potential tumor suppressor role against colorectal carcinogenesis with its expression associated with DNA hypomethylation of exon 1

Insulin-like growth factor binding-protein-7 （IGFBP7） was obtained from our previous colonic adenocarcinoma （CRC） and normal mucosa suppression subtraction hybridization （SSH） cDNA libraries. By RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, we found that IGFBP7 was overexpressed in CRC tissue compared to normal tissue. However, our in vitro experiments performed in 10 CRC cell lines showed that IGFBP7 expressed only in SW480 and Caco2 cell lines, which implied an underlying reversible regulatory mechanism. Using methylation-specific PCR （MSP） and bisulfite sodium PCR （BSP）, we found that its expression was associated with DNA hypomethylation of exonl. This was further supported by the in vitro study which showed restored IGFBP7 expression after demethylation agent 5-aza-2＇-deoxycytidine treatment. Correlation analysis between IGFBP7 expression and prognosis indicated that overexpression of IGFBP7 in CRC tissue correlated with favourable survival. Investigation of the functional role of IGFBP7 through transfection studies showed that IGFBP7 protein could inhibit growth rate, decrease colony formation activity, and induce apoptosis in RKO and SW620 cells, suggesting it a potential tumor suppressor protein in colorectal carcinogenesis. In conclusion, our study clearly demonstrated that IGFBP7 plays a potential tumor suppressor role against colorectal carcinogenesis and its expression is associated with DNA hypomethylation of exon 1.     

POLITICS OF LOCAL INTERLIBRARY COOPERATION

Social and political issues are key factors in developing cooperation among public libraries. Experiences in public library cooperation have shown that the acceptance of cooperation as an ideal, patron reaction and acceptance, local pride and control, and the education and cooperation of the library board, local government officials, and funding agencies are all important in providing the best possible framework for cooperation. The commitment to and understanding of the implications, changes, and modifications that cooperation requires are also important. Realization that interpretation of what cooperation means and that unequal contributions can be expected are necessary steps in developing effective arrangements among public libraries.     

Comparative features of colorectal and gastric cancers with microsatellite instability in Chinese patients

The purpose of this study was to determine the unique and universal features of microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) colorectal cancer (CRC) and MSI-H gastric cancer (GC) in the Chinese population.     

RRM1 gene expression in peripheral blood is predictive of shorter survival in Chinese patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer treated by gemcitabine and platinum

Objective  

To evaluate the predictive values of gene expressions of ribonucleotide reductase M1 (RRM1) and breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) in peripheral blood from Chinese patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with gemcitabine plus platinum.     

“It’s My Job Now,I Guess”: Biographical disruption and communication work in supporters of young adult cancer survivors

ABSTRACT

This study uses narrative interviews to describe how 25 young adult (YA) close supporters (i.e., romantic partners, siblings) experience an often invisible and uniquely burdensome biographical disruption following a young adult cancer survivor’s (YACS; i.e., 18–39) diagnosis. YA supporters reported varying levels of biographical interdependence with the YACS and family system uncertainty with other important supporters. These factors led YA romantic partners and siblings to engage in different types of communication work to negotiate and maintain primary and secondary support roles with parents and in-laws, to ensure that the YACS received helpful social support by gatekeeping (i.e., correcting, blocking) others’ support attempts, and to accommodate both their own and the YACS’s disrupted biographies.     

洛铂联合重组人血管内皮抑素胸腔内注射治疗肺癌恶性胸腔积液临床研究

目的：研究洛铂联合重组人血管内皮抑素（恩度）治疗肺癌恶性胸腔积液的有效性和安全性。方法：对确诊为肺癌恶性胸腔积液的63例患者进行分析,采用胸腔内注射治疗方法,其中32例注入洛铂和恩度（A组）,31例注入顺铂和恩度（B组）,比较两组间疗效、生活质量和毒副作用。结果：洛铂和恩度组与顺铂和恩度组在疗效和生活质量改善上比较差异无统计学意义（P〉0．05）,在毒副作用方面,洛铂和恩度组白细胞（WBC）减少、贫血、恶心呕吐发生率较顺铂和恩度组低,差异有统计学意义（P〈0．05）。结论：洛铂联合恩度胸腔内注射治疗肺癌恶性胸腔积液疗效与顺铂联合恩度相当,毒副作用较轻。     

子宫颈癌疫苗研究新进展

子宫颈癌是妇女中最常见的恶性肿瘤之一。人乳头状瘤病毒感染是子宫颈癌发生的基本因素,预防人乳头状瘤病毒感染就可以避免子宫颈癌的发生,理想的预防方法是应用人乳头状瘤病毒疫苗。目前预防和治疗宫颈癌的疫苗类型有载体类、抗原相关类、细胞类等。本文综述了上述疫苗的作用机理及研究进展。并对未来宫颈癌的治疗进行了展望。
