Antecedents of corporate spin-offs in Spain: A resource-based approach

We explore the antecedents of corporate spin-offs for a sample of 3462 Spanish firms between 1992 and 2002. Using a resource-based approach, we identify three reasons firms engage in spin-offs: (a) to create complementarities, (b) to appropriate residual rents, and (c) to focus on the core business. Specifically, we find that spin-offs are more common among firms that belong to a group able to create networks and new knowledge that can be exploited through spin-offs. In addition, we find that spin-offs are more frequent in firms that wish to exploit strategic advantages achieved through knowledge investments and in firms that increase efforts to the focus on the parent firm's core competences.     

Symbol error probability of decode and forward cooperative diversity in Nakagami-m fading channels

In this paper, we provide closed-form expressions for the symbol error probability of decode and forward cooperative diversity systems, when operating over independent but not necessarily identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels. The results hold for arbitrary number of relays, and refer to the M-ary QAM and M-ary PSK modulations.

对于双缝衍射实验,概率幅的迭加原理是指当两条缝同时打开时,一个电子通过某一条缝达到屏幕上某处的概率幅等于两条缝轮流打开时,该事件的两个概率幅之和.从这一原理得出结论：概率本身不遵循迭加原理,而这就是经典概率论不适用于微观过程的原因.柯氏概率论立足于概率的频率定义与事件运算的布尔代数两大基石,在微观过程中,概率的频率定义仍然有效,但事件运算不再遵循布尔代数的规则,特别是不遵循其乘法的交换律.因此,只要不涉及事件运算,柯氏概率论的联合概率的概念还是可以用于微观过程.但是当涉及事件运算时,将联合概率的运算公式应用于微观过程很可能得出错误的结论,贝尔不等式就是这样一个错误的结论.     

Signs and meanings in students' emergent algebraic thinking: A semiotic analysis

The purpose of this article, which is part of a longitudinal classroom research about students' algebraic symbolizations, is twofold: (1) to investigate the way students use signs and endow them with meaning in their very first encounter with the algebraic generalization of patterns and(2) to provide accounts about the students' emergent algebraic thinking. The research draws from Vygotsky's historical-cultural school of psychology, on the one hand, and from Bakhtin and Voloshinov's theory of discourse on the other, and is grounded in a semiotic-cultural theoretical framework in which algebraic thinking is considered as a sign-mediated cognitive praxis. Within this theoretical framework, the students' algebraic activity is investigated in the interaction of the individual's subjectivity and the social means of semiotic objectification. An ethnographic qualitative methodology, supported by historic, epistemological research, ensured the design and interpretation of a set of teaching activities. The paper focuses on the discussion held by a small group of students of which an interpretative, situated discourse analysis is provided. The results shed some light on the students' production of (oral and written) signs and their meanings as they engage in the construction of expressions of mathematical generality and on the social nature of their emergent algebraic thinking.
