Travel is indeed transformative when inward journeying goes hand in hand with outward journeys. This article relates some of the author's travels that challenged her values and beliefs and enriched her life. Some of these travels included cross-cultural and intercultural experiences that lead her to transform her counselling practice and teaching. Insider-researchers are said to enjoy many advantages during the interview process that help them to access the innermost thoughts of participants. As a Chinese doctoral student interviewing other Chinese doctoral students, I assumed I was an insider. However, my experiences proved otherwise, as I oscillated between insider and outsider positions. At the core of the matter was the question of a common Chinese identity, which has been complicated by centuries of diaspora. In trying to reconcile the confusion, a Middle Way approach to integrating opposites proved useful, by acknowledging that while indigenous differences exist, there are also common humanistic elements within all cultures. Based on narrative reflections from the doctoral study's interviews and research diary, the paper critically reflects on moments of cultural proximity and cultural distance during the interview process. The paper problematizes the insider/outsider dichotomy and proposes relationalism in its place. The paper concludes that a respect for face and harmony were crucial in closing cultural distance with Chinese international students, as these resulted in trust and rapport building during interviews. It is hoped that this paper will serve as a cultural bridge to engender an understanding of interviewing across a pan-Chinese sample.  相似文献

This study explored the influence of residency status (outsider) and prior cross-cultural experiences on how the neighborhoods of students are perceived by future teachers. The study participants consisted of 18 graduate teacher education mentors and their 18 high school mentees. The data sources included 820 black and white photographs and 82 photo captions generated by the study participants, mentee/mentor group discussions, and the graduate students’ weekly reflective journals, bi-weekly facilitated discussions and peer debriefings. The study found that subconscious realities based on prior cross-cultural experiences (or the lack thereof) are more significant factors than residency status when making value judgment about the neighborhoods of “others.” Elinor L. In the past decades, the "CH"(Confucian Heritage Culture)learner phenomenon had aroused the interest of sociologists, educators and psychologists. Examination orientation, achievement orientation, use of repetitive learning, synthesis of memorization and understanding, and the use of recitation to bring about sharp focus for better understanding were some of the themes of these researches. This paper will explain what the general paradox of CHC learners is and how cultural difference can affect students' motivation for learning according to Chen and Stevenson's model of cultural influence, and discuss the major misconception of CHC learners' study approach.  相似文献
