Christianity and Science: Friends at the Beginning

Faculty members pursue external grants to support educational initiatives, but must do so mindfully because grants inadvertently can undermine core instructional activities. To reach full leadership potential, faculty members should act as “street-level democrats,” focused on the needs of students, teachers, and the communities served. This article illustrates how the leaders of the Massachusetts Coalition for Teacher Quality and Student Achievement used this concept to enhance the preparation of student teachers to work in urban school systems.     

Assessment in Alberta: Six Areas of Concern

This report on the Alberta Student Assessment Study describes the context, methodology, and emergent themes. It outlines the purposes and uses of assessment according to the various stakeholder groups. Using both qualitative and quantitative data from students and parents, as well as educators at all levels, there were six areas or themes that emerged for further exploration: politics of assessment, decision making, teacher learning, communication and relationships, instructional leadership, and fairness and equity.     

El Colegio Altamirano (1897–1958): New Histories of Chicano Education in the Southwest

In the history of education, every generation brings forth someone who has a lasting impact on the current and future generations of educators. Ralph Winfred Tyler was one of those people. His life spanned nearly the entire 20th century, and his concepts of curriculum and instruction transcended this long and fruitful existence. They are found today embedded in the accountability and reform movements. This article is a short celebration of his contributions and life lest, in our hurry to improve our schools, we forget this bit of heritage.

Fatal child neglect: Characteristics,causation, and strategies for prevention

Research in child fatalities because of abuse and neglect has continued to increase, yet the mechanisms of the death incident and risk factors for these deaths remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to systematically examine the types of neglect that resulted in children's deaths as determined by child welfare and a child death review board. This case review study reviewed 22 years of data (n = 372) of child fatalities attributed solely to neglect taken from a larger sample (N = 754) of abuse and neglect death cases spanning the years 1987–2008. The file information reviewed was provided by the Oklahoma Child Death Review Board (CDRB) and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Children and Family Services. Variables of interest were child age, ethnicity, and birth order; parental age and ethnicity; cause of death as determined by child protective services (CPS); and involvement with DHS at the time of the fatal event. Three categories of fatal neglect – supervisory neglect, deprivation of needs, and medical neglect – were identified and analyzed. Results found an overwhelming presence of supervisory neglect in child neglect fatalities and indicated no significant differences between children living in rural and urban settings. Young children and male children comprised the majority of fatalities, and African American and Native American children were over-represented in the sample when compared to the state population. This study underscores the critical need for prevention and educational programming related to appropriate adult supervision and adequate safety measures to prevent a child's death because of neglect.

教学督导的基本职责是督其到位,导其提高,其包括导教、导学、导管理;工作内容为教学常规督导、教学建设督导和教学改革督导。当前我国高校教学督导工作应该解决好三个问题:第一、明确定位,完善机制;第二、明确职责,健全功能;第三,市、校、院（或分院）三级教学督导相辅相成,各显其能,从宏观、中观和微观三个视角共同构成了一所学校教学质量的监控体系。     

试论工商部门对企业信用的管理

市场经济是信用经济,企业作为市场经济的微观主体对经济秩序的规范有着直接的影响,它的信用是社会信用体系建设中的基础和核心。但在向市场经济转轨的过程中,我国企业失信问题仍然时有发生。为此,在分析建立企业信用必要性和当前我国企业信用建设中存在的主要问题的基础上,通过建立博弈模型论证了工商部门介入企业信用管理的优势,并对进一步加强和改进工商部门对企业信用监管问题提出几点建议,以期对目前工商部门的企业信用监管实践有所裨益。

新闻舆论监督司法的思考

本文在分析当前舆论监督司法存在问题的基础上,提出舆论监督应以不侵犯司法独立为限度,即舆论监督司法虽然有必要,但要有限度并把握好方向,舆论监督与司法独立之间应保持一种合适的平衡机制和标准。
