Local social capital through e‐mentoring: an agenda for new research

This article synthesizes research on social capital, school outcomes, internet use, and volunteering to argue that e‐mentoring – which is commonly practiced over long distances – could become a powerful way to build greater cohesiveness in local communities. Realizing this potential will require a larger‐scale and more coordinated approach to research and program design, as well as a change in e‐mentoring researchers’ methods. The payoff for these changes would be greater opportunity for e‐mentoring research to contribute to social policy and school effectiveness initiatives.     

Perceptions among occupational and physical therapy students of a nontraditional methodology for teaching laboratory gross anatomy

This pilot study was designed to assess the perceptions of physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) students regarding the use of computer-assisted pedagogy and prosection-oriented communications in the laboratory component of a human anatomy course at a comprehensive health sciences university in the southeastern United States. The goal was to determine whether student perceptions changed over the course of a summer session regarding verbal, visual, tactile, and web-based teaching methodologies. Pretest and post-test surveys were distributed online to students who volunteered to participate in the pilot study. Despite the relatively small sample size, statistically significant results indicated that PT and OT students who participated in this study perceived an improved ability to name major anatomical structures from memory, to draw major anatomical structures from memory, and to explain major anatomical relationships from memory. Students differed in their preferred learning styles. This study demonstrates that the combination of small group learning and digital web-based learning seems to increase PT and OT students' confidence in their anatomical knowledge. Further research is needed to determine which forms of integrated instruction lead to improved student performance in the human gross anatomy laboratory.     

History of education in Canada: historiographic “turns” and widening horizons

This paper explores major historiographic “turns” in history of education with a focus, although not exclusively, on English-speaking Canada. It addresses the transformative intellectual impact of the turn toward social history on the history of education, the impact of cultural history and the linguistic turn, the reception of Michel Foucault, and the state of the debate in history at-large today and its implications for the history of education. It also attempts to contextualise the intellectual trends permeating the writing of the history of education in light of developments in education, and signals new directions in historiography influencing history of education. Given the limitations of space, rather than engaging in a historiographical analysis of individual historians of education, the paper traces broad trends, while highlighting the contributions of a significant few.     

Objects and issues—a Sunday Supplement view of continuing professional development in higher education

This paper draws on the presentation of three online pilot ‘series’ of learning objects aimed at offering university staff convenient updating opportunities around issues connected with e‐learning. The ‘Hot Topics' format presented short themed sets (series) of learning objects to a wide‐range of staff, encouraging sampling strategies to support variable levels of engagement and re‐scheduling within the series which reflects each participants’ personal preferences, time or other constraints. Developed by the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) at the UK Open University, and delivered using IET's knowledge‐sharing Knowledge Network, this format suggests a new way of facilitating continuing professional development in HEIs, and also offers fresh insights into the consequences of using learning objects for staff development and the difficulties of evaluating staff development activity based on learning objects. This paper is particularly concerned with the consequences of offering choice to the series' participants and more flexible options for dissemination to potential contributors.

论中西方古典悲剧思想根源之差异——以《哈姆雷特》和《窦娥冤》为例

自人类从蛮荒走向文明开始,悲剧这种特定的文学形式就是世界文学发展长河中最重要的一个组成部分。中国有着五千年悠久的文明史,其悲剧在世界文学宝库中也占有重要的地位。以《哈姆雷特》和《窦娥冤》这两部中西方的经典悲剧为例,追根溯源,通过对西方基督教义和中国传统伦理道德的对比分析,论证了中西方古典悲剧思想根源的差异及对其学习的重要性。     

电子商务模式交易成本的经济学分析

本文运用交易成本经济学的理论与方法,探讨了电子商务模式的设计原则。并以一种跨学科的研究视角,对电子商务模式的内涵与设计原则进行了重新审视,力求为电子商务模式的创新活动提供一些新的思路。     

Evolución del rendimiento matemático temprano en una muestra de alumnos con discapacidad intelectual,mediante la prueba TEMA-2

Resumen

Este estudio presenta el análisis de la evolución del rendimiento en competencia aritmética básica en una muestra de sujetos con déficit intelectual (moderados y ligeros). Se evaluó a los alumnos (N=79) con la prueba TEMA-2 (Test of Early Mathematics Ability; Ginsburg y Baroody, 1990), en dos ocasiones, con un lapso de tiempo de 3 años. Los datos fueron analizados mediante ANOVA's (2x2x2) de medidas repetidas, en los que se confirmó un progreso significativo en casi todos los componentes de la prueba, independientemente del nivel cognitivo y la edad cronológica. También fue realizado un análisis del patrón de cambio manifestado por cada alumno no puntúa, baja, mantiene o sube en relación a su edad equivalente en matemáticas). Se comentan las características que comparten las tareas que presentan mayor y menor avance y la necesidad de profundizar en el conocimiento de las competencias académicas de los alumnos con necesidades educativas especiales.
