Using Music to Support the Literacy Development of Young English Language Learners

Integrating experiences with music in the early childhood classroom supports English language learners’ literacy development (Peregoy and Boyle, Reading, writing, and learning in ESL. Pearson, Boston, 2008; Saricoban and Metin, Songs, verse and games for teaching grammar. Internet TESL J, 2000). This article describes the benefits of incorporating musical experiences into daily instruction and provides practical activities for classroom implementation, e.g., reading, writing, and singing songs for language skill development, reading fluency, and writing progress. Despite a teacher’s level of aesthetic appreciation and musical training, the value of fostering creativity and enhancing literacy instruction through music is vital in today’s diverse early childhood classrooms. Music can transform classrooms into positive learning environments where children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Providing children with structured and open-ended musical activities, creating an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect, and sharing the joy of creativity with each other all are foundational to bases for the growth and development of the early childhood learner.     

Determinants of Malaysian adult learners＇ distance learning

This study attempts to identify the factors perceived to be important in choosing an Institution of Higher Learning （IHL） for distance learning. One thousand five hundred questionnaires were distributed to the first year students in the social sciences distance learning programs and 980 valid responses were received of Malaysian public university. The results show that the top three factors influencing their preferred institution are qualification recognition IHL, future career advancement, and personal satisfaction. The results of this study provide insights to the IHL, employers and academics on the nature and relative importance of the factors perceived important for adult learners in the selection of their preferred IHL.     

差生的英语学习成就归因——中国大学生与中学生的对比分析

本研究考查了中国大、中学两个层次英语差生的归因方式之间的异同,以及同一层次内部归因方式的异同。首先,通过开放性调查,获得了中国大、中学生归因方式的几种主要倾向。在此基础上,设计并实施了一个半封闭式的问卷调查,考查了大、中学差生的归因方式。研究发现中国英语学习者对英语学习成败有着一些新的归因方式,大、中学差生在归因方式的倾向性方面没有差异,但各层次内部差生的归因方式之间有着显著差异。     

影响俄语专业学生学习俄语的主要因素及对策

近年来,我国的俄语教育有发展的趋势,俄语专业招生也在不断扩大,当今的俄语教学不同于过去,成功的俄语教学关键在于了解影响学生学习的因素,找出解决问题的对策,提高俄语教学质量。     

大学英语学习者自主能力培养模式的建构

近年来,学习者自主这一教育理念引起了国内外学者的高度的重视。探讨构建一种培养大学英语学习者自主性模式,是我国大学英语教学改革,提高教学质量的关键。文章分析了大学生英语自主学习的理论基础和现实需求,以及学习者自主学习所需要的内外在条件,从学生和教师两个角度,分析了建立培养大学生英语学习者自主能力的方法。     

大学英语翻转课堂中学习者接受度的路径研究

本研究从理性行为和外语焦虑角度探索大学英语学习者对翻转学习的接受度的影响因素｡ 研究共提取输出态度､输入反感度､自主学习态度､课堂态度､效果预期及整体接受度六个因子｡路径分析显示效果预期､输入排斥度､课堂态度直接决定接受度;其他因子有间接影响｡回归分析发现整体接受度仍然是预测成绩的主要因素;而自主学习态度对口语成绩有较明显的预示力｡研究提示教师应该从内外机制加强整体接受度和自主性｡     

Adult learners’ emotions in online learning

The aim of the research study reported in this article was to investigate how adult learners talk about their emotions in the context of a year‐long online course, the first online course these adults take, as part of a distance education program. The theoretical and methodological approach focused on formulating an account of how emotion discourses are used by learners, what role they play in online learning, and how they change over a one‐year period (if they do so). The findings of this study provide three insights: (1) they show how adult learners (who also happen to be novice online learners) respond emotionally and talk about their emotions in relation to online learning; (2) they call attention to the ways in which emotion talk changes from the beginning of the course to the end, always in response to specific demands and dimensions of online learning; and (3) they reveal the differential emotional responses between men and women in relation to their social and gender roles and responsibilities. Empirical and policy implications of this study are discussed at the end.
