Diversity study circles in teacher education practice: An experiential learning project

This paper addresses the dilemma of trying to prepare primarily white preservice teachers for educational arenas in which they will interface with students of colour and many who are socially disadvantaged. This paper describes how diversity study circles can be integrated as integral to education that is multicultural in the development of preservice teachers’ critical self-reflection as a bridge to developing a critical lens for classroom practice and a democratic society.

中国心理学中同性恋研究综述

文章选取了国内心理学界与同性恋问题有关的142篇学术论文,从论文发表的时间、数量、研究内容和研究方法等方面分析了中国同性恋研究的基本情况,指出国内心理学界的同性恋问题研究存在研究方法单一、被试面过窄、理论探讨深度不够等问题,提出今后的研究应更加强调方法的多样性、内容的丰富性、理论分析的深刻性。     

The Impact of Over-Simplifying the Between-Subject Covariance Structure on Inferences of Fixed Effects in Modeling Nested Data

This study discusses the effects of oversimplifying the between-subject covariance structure on inferences for fixed effects in modeling nested data. Linear and quadratic growth curve models (GCMs) with both full and simplified between-subject covariance structures were fit to real longitudinal data. The results were contradictory to the statement that using oversimplified between-subject covariance structures (e.g., uni-level analysis) leads to underestimated standard errors of fixed effect estimates and thus inflated Type I error rates. We analytically derived simple mathematical forms to systematically examine the oversimplification effects for the linear GCMs. The derivation results were aligned with the real data analysis results and further revealed the conditions under which the standard errors of the fixed-effect intercept and slope estimates could be underestimated or overestimated for over-simplified linear GCMs. Therefore, our results showed that the underestimation statement is a myth and can be misleading. Implications are discussed and recommendations are provided.     

Using Historical Nonfiction and Literature Circles to Develop Elementary Teachers’ Nature of Science Understandings

Explicit instruction of the nature of science (NOS) may be problematic if the NOS is portrayed as either a solely a cognitive or discursive endeavor, overlooking other aspects of epistemology, such as aesthetic ways of knowing. Here the aesthetic stance refers to individual’s responses during reading as they create links between the text and their own lives, prompting personal and emotional connections. From an aesthetic orientation, exploring historical nonfiction science texts via literature circles allows alternative possibilities for participants to create personal connections to the NOS. This article presents practical techniques and theoretical rationales for teaching the NOS using literature circles and concluding thoughts regarding narrative pedagogy and research possibilities associated with this instructional approach in elementary science teacher education.     

Research Circles: Supporting the Scholarship of Junior Faculty

This article describes and assesses “Research Circles” as a mechanism for enhancing faculty collegiality and research. Recently established on our campus, these circles, composed of three to four faculty members, have had a particularly powerful effect on the new faculty members' adjustment to their tenure track positions, especially since they entered a context that might otherwise have been challenging: a new interdisciplinary upper-division campus with high expectations for teaching excellence. Based on the end-of-year evaluations, journals, and focus groups, the co-authors described themes that emerged from their participation in these circles. Circle participation not only facilitated faculty writing throughout their first year, but it also fostered the development of an interdisciplinary community which nurtured creativity and risk taking in writing. All authors are currently teaching in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) at The University of Washington, Bothell (UWB). Except for Diane Gillespie, Professor and Associate Director of IAS, all other authors are Assistant Professors in IAS. Diane Gillespie received her Ph.D. in cultural and psychological studies in education from The University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Her interests include critical pedagogy, narrative psychology, and cultural diversity. Nives Dolšak received a joint Ph.D. in public policy and political science from Indiana University. Her interests include public policy, environmental policy, and international relations. Bruce Kochis, received his Ph.D. in Slavic languages & literatures at the University of Michigan. He focuses on global human rights policy, discourse analysis, and political theory. Ron Krabill received his Ph.D. in sociology and historical studies from New School for Social Research. His interests include comparative media, politics and social movements with a special emphasis on South Africa, as well as the study of peace, conflict, social justice, and human rights. Kari Lerum received her Ph.D. in sociology from The University of Washington. Her interests include culture, organizations, sexuality, qualitative methods, and visual studies. Anne Peterson received her Ph.D. from Washington University. Her interests include urban politics and policy and the distribution of natural resources at the local level. Elizabeth Thomas received her Ph.D. in psychology from The University of Illinois at Urbana—Champaign. Her interests include community-based resources for adolescent development, cultural psychology, and the social context of learning.
