ABSTRACT

Students need to be prepared for the 21st century by developing the literacy skills necessary for participating in the age of synthesis—an age that requires a progressive set of skills and knowledge. The authors identified nine educational innovations that are perceived to be effective for preparing students for the 21st century age of synthesis society. They coded a collection of 39 teacher-generated Grade 3–5 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lesson plans to document the extent to which the teachers included these nine educational innovations their STEM lesson planning. The authors found practices such as project-based and student-centered learning (which are common established approaches to teaching STEM) to be strongly represented in the plans, whereas practices such as family involvement and place-based learning (which have not been traditionally used in STEM instruction) were less evident in the plans. In their discussion they explore the implications for STEM teaching, and potential directions for future research.  相似文献

Children managing chronic health conditions face many obstacles which can impede their learning during periods of hospitalisation. In one particular hospital, a team of educators deemed it necessary to take a personalised learning approach in order to maintain students’ educational progress, namely making use of individual learning plans (ILPs). This team adopted an evidence‐informed practice (EIP) approach to the issue in order to persuade administrators of the need for change. The successful implementation of the EIP approach led to the inclusion of the ILP form in patients’ medical records, which is thought to be a first for Australia. Although EIP is regarded highly by practitioners and policy makers, there can be difficulties when implementing this approach. This study aims to identify the enabling features that permit EIP to be successfully implemented and to examine the ways in which EIP can lead to improved practice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  This article describes a theory about the ambition of most Inspectorates to realise 'school improvement through inspection'. Literature about a number of direct and indirect interventions, such as reciprocity, communication and feedback is used to build a theoretical model stating the relations between working methods of school inspectors, reactions of schools and resulting effects and side effects. Finally two types of inspections strategies are described that can be used in different types of schools. We expect schools with a low innovation capacity and few external impulses to be helped best by a directive approach in which an inspector clearly points to the strong and weak points of the school, the probable causes of their level of functioning, and potential ways for improvement. The inspector should pressure the school to change by making written agreements on how to change and by asking the school to work out these agreements in an improvement plan. A school with a high innovation capacity and strong external impulses is expected to do better with a more reserved inspection approach. Inspectors only need to provide this school with some insight into their strong and weak points.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to describe a case study that addresses issues related to stack end signage in a university library. Poor stack end signage can negatively influence patrons' ability to navigate the library and locate physical materials. At the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library, a tool was developed using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to quickly and inexpensively mass-produce effective and user-friendly stack end signage. This article details the specific steps taken to develop, implement, and utilize this instrument.  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigated teacher profiles with regards to their conception of truth. The explanatory sequential design began with the first phase administering a survey to a random sample from across the American southeast. Results were aggregated and each teacher was profiled with regards to four diverse views of truth: correspondence, relativist, pragmatist, and critical. The second phase of the study analyzed open-ended responses to a set of questions about instructional practices of teachers for comparison of common practices based on truth profile. The results of this investigation found a significant proportion of teachers hold contradictory views of truth while those who are firmly within one profile have noticeable distinctions among priorities, perspectives, and practices. Implications for these findings are discussed with practical consideration for the classroom regarding salient topics such as learning online, engaging in social media, and combatting fake news.  相似文献
