Universal access to preschool education: approaches to integrating preschool with school in rural and remote communities

In 2012, the government of South Australia responded to Federal agreements aimed at universal access to preschool education for children in the year before starting formal schooling by introducing a trial designed to ‘integrate’ preschool children into first year of school programmes in rural and remote areas of the state. This paper reports on the evaluation of this trial, exploring the ways in which integration was interpreted and implemented in eight rural and/or remote sites, the perceived value of collaboration in planning integrated provision and the ways in which two new curriculum documents – one for the prior-to-school years and the other for compulsory school – influenced the delivery of integrated preschool–school programmes. Results identify several types of integration, highlight some of the challenges of collaboration in integrating preschool with school and share the caution of educators about the push down of school curriculum into preschool contexts.     

Professional development on fostering students’ academic language proficiency across the curriculum—A meta-analysis of its impact on teachers’ cognition and teaching practices

This meta-analysis aggregates effects from 10 studies evaluating professional development interventions aimed at qualifying in-service teachers to support their students in mastering academic language skills while teaching their respective subject areas. The analysis of a subset of studies revealed a small non-significant weighted training effect on teachers’ cognition (g’ = 0.21, SE = 0.14). An effect aggregation including all studies (with 650 teachers) revealed a medium to large weighted overall effect on teachers’ classroom practices (g’ = 0.71, SE = 0.16). Methodological variables moderated the effect magnitude. Nevertheless, the results suggest professional development is beneficial for improving teachers’ practice.

两都赋：经济的浮华与文化的废墟——贾平凹的《废都》与叶辛的《华都》的比较研究

《废都》与《华都》均反映了商业化进程对文化的冲击以及人文精神的丧失；表现了著名男性的魅力以及对女性的强大诱惑力，表达了人文学者的自恋情结；在赤裸裸的性爱展示中流露出对女性的歧视；在身心疲惫后，试图在城乡的碰撞中寻找人的精神家园。同时，二者还有巨大的不同：《废都》表现的是历史辉煌过后的废墟，《华都》表现的繁华现实背后掩藏的历史废墟；庄之蝶与女性的交往是一种救赎，姚征冬与女性的交往却是对自我身份的一种确证；贾平凹以乡村来匡正城市的荒漠化，而叶辛却把上海与贵州相提并论。两位作家的情绪表现都充满着遗老遗少味，对现代性的拒绝表明了他们的边缘化与无可奈何。     

新疆城乡差距的现状及对策分析

改革开放以来,新疆以前所未有的高速度发展,综合实力不断增强,各项改革稳步推进,人民生活水平显著提高,各民族安居乐业,经济建设成就显著。但同时我们也应该看到新疆城乡差距的不断扩大,日益成为制约经济社会协调发展的障碍。本文通过分析新疆城乡发展差距的现状以及产生的原因,提出了相应的解决对策,以期实现城乡的协调发展。     

经济欠发达地区城市化滞后现状分析及其对策

城市化水平在我国呈现出明显的区域差异性特点，中西部经济欠发达地区城市化率偏低、城市规模较小、竞争力不强。这种状况不但不利于本地区城市及农村的建设进程，而且给东部沿海大城市带来了很大压力。究其原因既因为内部农民自身观念落后、缺少首创精神，项目选择不当而起;又归于外部财力不足，基层政府不作为所致。为推进中西部地区的城市化进程，迫切需要在上述几方面作出制度创新，提供相应的制度安排。     

乡镇企业和长江三角洲乡村人口的城镇化——以苏南地区为例

明清以前我国农村基础设施建设的历史演进

随着经济的持续高速发展,我国的农村基础设施供给不足已成为制约农村经济发展和影响农民生活的主要“瓶颈”之一。如何有效地增加农村基础设施投资,改善农业生产条件和农民生活环境成了当前讨论的热点话题。客观地总结我国明清以前农村基础设施建设的历史实践,对当前发展现代农业和建设社会主义新农村具有借鉴意义。     

Long Distance Relationships: Assessing the Library Service Needs of Rural Students in eLearning Courses

ABSTRACT

In states with limited road accessibility, rural students can feel isolated from library services. This article explores the creation, implementation, and results of an on-going longitudinal study assessing the library service needs of rural students in eLearning courses. To align with current practices in online pedagogies, including the Association of College and Research Libraries' Standards for Distance Learning Library Services and recent revisions to the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, this survey has been designed to help the library identify and improve services to enhance rural student success.
