This article explores the suggestion that the UK should follow the lead of the United States and establish Troops to Teaching programmes. In particular, it examines the worth of the suggestion that non-graduate qualifications similar to those that have been designed for teaching assistants might be usefully employed to achieve this. In England, foundation degree study has typically been the route followed by teaching assistants who have decided that they would like to become qualified teachers. The value of adopting such an approach, in relation to the UK coalition government’s desire to establish a viable Troops to Teaching programme, is specifically explored. Research which has investigated English school-based teaching assistants’ experiences of participating in foundation degree study is drawn upon to interrogate this theme.  相似文献

In this article I examine whether Moral Foundations Theory can fulfil the promises that Haidt claims for the theory: that it will help in developing new approaches to moral education and to the moral conflicts that divide our diverse society. I argue that, first, the model that Haidt suggests for understanding the plurality of moralities—a shared foundation underlying diverse moralities—does not help to overcome conflicts. A better understanding of the nature and background of moral conflicts can lead to a more respectful attitude towards people with conflicting views, but need not contribute to ending conflicts. Second, I show that pervasive moral conflicts should be dealt with on the level of politics. They require a morality of compromising. Third, I examine why this approach does not seem to work in the USA.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article I explore some aspects of the apparent ineffectiveness of the post‐compulsory education sector to consistently promote high levels of achievement. I examine a selection of concepts and strategies emanating from the school effectiveness and improvement movement and propose that certain of these are potentially transferable with positive benefits. The self‐improvement, or quality enhancement, trends discernible since incorporation within the the colleges are briefly reviewed. The case is made for the augmentation of these by the importation of key ideas from school‐based studies and innovations, and particular attention is drawn to the sharp contrast between the wealth of these and the dearth of research to date on college effectiveness.  相似文献

Progression from a foundation degree to an honours degree has become an increasingly popular pathway through higher education. The route creates dual institution scenarios in which students can progress from a further education institution to a higher education institution. This paper reports on research into the academic and social integration of progression students into a higher education institution to complete their honours degree. It highlights the ways in which progression students face many first year issues whilst completing the final stage of their higher education studies and possible ways of addressing these issues. The evidence presented here suggests an explicit need to recognise not only the academic and social issues of progression, but also how these relate to the wider physical and cultural changes experienced. It also suggests that these issues are often overlooked by research which focuses almost exclusively on variables affecting the retention and attrition of traditional first year students.  相似文献

应天书院在北宋时期位居全国四大书院之首,在文化教育史上具有重要地位。应天书院的前身为后晋戚同文讲学的睢阳学舍,北宋大中祥符二年获应天书院赐额,书院日益官学化。北宋时期,应天书院位于州(府)治东,明代嘉靖年间,御史蔡叆改建社学为应天书院,在商丘县城西北隅。郑三俊于万历二十九年建宋范文正公讲院,可以看作是北宋应天书院的延续。  相似文献
