Evaluation of Teacher Perceptions and Potential of OpenOffice in a K–12 School District

Through this mixed-method evaluation study the authors investigated a pilot implementation of an open-source productivity suite for teachers in a K–12 public school district. The authors evaluated OpenOffice version 3.0 using measures identified by the technology acceptance model as predictors of acceptance and use of technology systems. During a four-week trial period, teachers rated the usefulness and usability of OpenOffice 3.0 and Microsoft Office. Results from quantitative measures and participant interviews revealed common perceptions of the software applications as well as common problems encountered by users. Based on these findings, implications and recommendations for larger scale implementations within a K–12 educational institution are discussed.     

Examining Student Digital Artifacts During a Year-Long Technology Integration Initiative

This study was situated within a year-long, statewide technology integration initiative designed to support technology integration within science, technology, engineering, and math classrooms. It examined the elements used in student artifacts in an attempt to investigate trends in digital artifact creation. Among several conclusions, this examination highlighted areas of significant improvement in student use of technology, such as an increase in the creation of PowerPoint presentations and the inclusion of multimedia elements. The study also highlighted areas for improvement, such as the low cognitive demand for content in the majority of the artifacts.     

The Good,the Bad,and the Ugly of Pedagogy in Harry Potter: An Inquiry Into the Personal Practical Knowledge of Remus Lupin,Rubeus Hagrid,and Severus Snape

On the 20th anniversary of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, we examine the narratives of pedagogical practice of three teachers at “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”. By drawing on these characters’ stories of teaching as presented in Rowling’s novels, we foreground their personal practical knowledge and the relationship of this knowledge to their curriculum-making. We do this in order to highlight the importance of narrative perspective and context in the assessment and evaluation of teachers’ pedagogical practice.     

Assessment of vitamin D concentration in non-supplemented professional athletes and healthy adults during the winter months in the UK: implications for skeletal muscle function

Abstract

The current study implemented a two-part design to (1) assess the vitamin D concentration of a large cohort of non-vitamin D supplemented UK-based athletes and 30 age-matched healthy non-athletes and (2) to examine the effects of 5000 IU · day^?1 vitamin D₃ supplementation for 8-weeks on musculoskeletal performance in a placebo controlled trial. Vitamin D concentration was determined as severely deficient if serum 25(OH)D < 12.5 nmol · l^?1, deficient 12.5–30 nmol · l^?1 and inadequate 30–50 nmol · l^?1. We demonstrate that 62% of the athletes (38/61) and 73% of the controls (22/30) exhibited serum total 25(OH)D < 50 nmol · l^?1. Additionally, vitamin D supplementation increased serum total 25(OH)D from baseline (mean ± SD = 29 ± 25 to 103 ± 25 nmol · l^?1, P = 0.0028), whereas the placebo showed no significant change (53 ± 29 to 74 ± 24 nmol · l^?1, P = 0.12). There was a significant increase in 10 m sprint times (P = 0.008) and vertical-jump (P = 0.008) in the vitamin D group whereas the placebo showed no change (P = 0.587 and P = 0.204 respectively). The current data supports previous findings that athletes living at Northerly latitudes (UK = 53° N) exhibit inadequate vitamin D concentrations (<50 nmol · l^?1). Additionally the data suggests that inadequate vitamin D concentration is detrimental to musculoskeletal performance in athletes. Future studies using larger athletic groups are now warranted.

建立了一种高效液相色谱测定木瓜中维生素C含量的方法．采用0．1％的草酸作为提取剂,色谱中采用Zorbax SB～C18色谱柱,0．1％草酸水作流动相,流速1．0m/min,紫外检测器检测波长261nm．维生素C在20—100μg／mL内有良好的线性关系,线性回归方程为A=73．0542C＋50．6898,相关系数为0．9998,方法回收率为98．81％～102．45％,相对标准偏差等于0．861％．所用测定方法简便、快速,能准确测定木瓜中维生素C的含量．
