From the Parlor to the Barnyard: Obama and Holder on Race

This essay explores Barack Obama's “A More Perfect Union” speech and Eric Holder's speech marking African American History Month as a case study of contemporary public discourse on race. This article argues that in these speeches, Obama and Holder perform the social drama of race relations in profoundly different ways. Drawing on the Burkean parlor and barnyard as metaphors of rhetorical form, the analysis demonstrates the interplay of these dialogic and agonistic forms in motivating democratic deliberation on race. Implications of these rhetorical forms for healthy democratic practice are discussed.     

Dialogic education as an approach to multiculturalism for social cohesion in Namibia

The paper explores approaches to cultural diversity and its relation to the concept of social cohesion in the context of a multicultural school community. It uses insights from an empirical research on multicultural education conducted in Namibia as context for a discussion on tools in educational practice that would support diversity while working towards a greater integration of a pluralistic society. Looking into the African concept of Ubuntu and the corresponding teachings of the philosophers of dialogue, this theoretical paper suggests dialogic learning as an approach to multiculturalism that can enhance tolerance among peoples and produce a society united through understanding.

一个时期以来 ,淡化传输、强化实践被视为改革语文教育的新思维。强化实践就一定要淡化传输吗 ?笔者认为 ,这种教育重心的平面调整存在着一个方法论误区 ,需要改变的不是知识传输本身 ,而是传输的方式方法。语言经验的传输过程包涵着一种被哲学解释学描述为“理解”、“对话”的内在结构 ,建构这一内在结构是语文教育解决传输与生成之悖论的关键。     

略评弗雷尔与哈贝马斯的认识论基础

弗雷尔和哈贝马斯都信奉“主体是对话发展的”这种批判理论,也都从元理论的角度阐释过理论与实践等问题。社会科学中有关认识论的纷争主要聚焦于两个极端：实证主义与反实证主义。而弗、哈两人的研究却游离于这两个极端,该类学术范式的变异立身于批判解释学的学科视阈。弗雷尔与哈贝马斯有关认识论的理论创见主要涵盖以下几个方面：对人类科学的认识;对批判逻辑这一转换过程的分析;基于对话与共识的真理理论;对交往理性与技术理性的比较。

该文试从两代人精神对话的角度重新审视儿童文学,尝试提出一种广义的“儿童文学”概念,认为作为文学活动的儿童文学是是成年人与儿童之间进行文化规训与“反女已训”的整合过程的一部分,而作为文学作品的儿童文学则是这种活动得以进行的话语场与其结果。     

The relational value of professional dialogue for academics pursuing HEA fellowship

The question of how academics in higher education institutions demonstrate they have the ability to teach and provide a high quality learning experience challenges the sector. Within this context, the use of professional dialogue for recognising teaching expertise is growing. This qualitative research explored how 16 academics valued their engagement in professional dialogue, and its impact as a developmental opportunity. The findings underline the importance of the relational and social aspects and value of this type of professional learning.     

The teacher shaping and creating dialogues in project work

The background of the work presented in this article is that for quite some time project work has been a method of working that is more theoretically described than it is put into practice. The aim of this text is to show how a teacher can function as a facilitator or a guide for the students within project‐directed teaching and how this setting can enhance the students’ learning. A qualitative method with a focus on dialogues in the classroom was used in the inquiry process. In this article a dialogue between the students in the realization phase of the work is analysed in depth to illustrate how student interaction framed by project work can enhance the students’ learning. In the study Dewey’s, Vygotsky’s and Bakhtin’s theories are used as a theoretical framework and the activity system is used to visualize the work processes in their intertwined context. The outcome of the study shows that learning is inherent in language, but concludes that it demands a great deal of the teacher to create such learning situations.

巴赫金对狂欢节的辞旧迎新内蕴、怪诞人体形象的生死边缘意义、广场语言的褒贬融合等双重性意义的把握,以及他关于对话、话语的阐述,无不强调其未完成性、开放性,这是巴赫金真理观的经典表述。这种表述使其诗学理论充满现代思想的敞开性。     

情境模拟在小学高年级英语对话教学中的运用

小学高年级英语的每篇对话课文,都与实际生活息息相关,但是小学英语课时较少,不能同时在学习好每篇对话课文后再进行“口语交流”的练习。教师要充分利用课堂时间,巧妙运用各种情境模拟,把所学的英语知识活化在日常对话中,提高学生英语口语的交流。     

Dialogic understanding of teachers' online transformative learning: A qualitative case study of teacher discussions in a graduate-level online course

Teachers are expected to implement new educational technologies and adapt to new teaching environments. However, it involves a complex learning process that can lead to their perspective transformation. We have developed and taught a discussion-based online course to facilitate teachers' transformative learning. This qualitative case study examines teachers' perspective transformation in our course to understand the nature of effective online teacher-to-teacher discussions. Based on a theoretical framework that integrates Mezirow's transformative learning model and Bakhtin's dialogism, this paper builds on previous literature on teacher-to-teacher discussions as well as providing a fresh perspective to inform the current globalized teacher education context.
