‘Revisiting’ the South Pacific approaches to learning: a confirmatory factor analysis study

There has been substantial research evidence concerning the learning approaches of students in Western and non‐Western contexts. Nonetheless, it has been a decade since research in the South Pacific was conducted on the learning approaches of tertiary students. The present research examined the learning approaches of Fijian and other Pacific Islands students enrolling in a professional‐based education course at the University of the South Pacific. Student approaches to learning and studying, Melbourne: Australian Council for Educational Research.  [Google Scholar]) Study Process Questionnaire was revised to suit the social and cultural contexts before it was distributed among 159 undergraduate students. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis did not support the theoretical framework of a three‐factor model (Biggs, 1987 Biggs, J. 1987. Student approaches to learning and studying, Melbourne: Australian Council for Educational Research.  [Google Scholar]) and, instead, indicated the existence of a two first‐factor model, emphasising two major types of learning approach – reproducing and meaning (Richardson, 1994 Richardson, J.T.E. 1994. The study’s findings suggest that educators should ensure that assessment and other teaching learning components are aligned constructively to promote the appropriate approach of learning.     

Kairos and the time of gender equity policy in Australian schooling

ABSTRACT

Almost 20 years ago the Australian government released Gender Equity: A Framework for Australian Schools (1997). It was adopted by all states but almost immediately disappeared from sight after a conservative change of government. This was followed by the dismantling of gender equity units in each state, and a turn to boys’ education that eclipsed the more complex strategies and theoretical underpinnings of the Framework. This paper takes up the Gender Equity Framework (1997) as a case of policy emergence, mutation and dissipation. In particular, it attends to feminist temporality, and its affective force, to begin to trouble conventional accounts of these policy shifts. Close readings of sections of the policy document and of interviews with policy actors working at that time are analysed through the notion of kairos – timeliness, or political actions that open opportunities, breaks and ruptures – in order to provide new insights into the policy moment of gender equity in Australian schooling.     

中国的海洋意识与海权现状——纪念郑和下西洋600周年

21世纪是海洋的世纪,中国民族的伟大复兴与海洋战略密切相关。郑和下西洋的伟大壮举及其强烈的海洋意识,是中华民族的骄傲,是中华民族的财富,今天的中国可以从中吸取宝贵的营养。今天的中国是海洋大国,但同时也是海洋弱国,要改变中国海洋弱国的局面,首先得在广大民众中强化海洋意识,大兴海洋文化。只有当浩瀚的南海、东海、黄海和渤海,成为与黄河、长江、长城一样神圣的民族图腾的时候,中国才可能真正成为太平洋上的巨龙。     

A National Laboratory and University Branch Campus Library Partnership: Shared Benefits and Challenges from Combined Reference Services

SUMMARY

The Hanford Technical Library of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Max E. Benitz Memorial Library of the Washington State University Tri-Cities Branch Campus have functioned both separately and in combination since moving into the same space within the Consolidated Information Center in 1997. The libraries have successfully partnered to serve different clientele at a combined reference desk since June 1997. Although having separate staffs, catalogs, and collections, the libraries share a single reference/information desk. The reference staffs work together to serve a very diverse clientele including students, faculty, engineers, scientists, contractors, regulators, and the public. The combined libraries offer significant benefits to both library staffs and their users. The libraries have expanded access to collections and information expertise, enhanced staff training opportunities, and provided additional hours of reference service to patrons while at the same time maintaining the individual identities of the two libraries.     

论美国“亚太再平衡战略””

21世纪前十年,美国对外政策的重点是军事反恐,重心在中东。但是"反恐战争"的目标并未实现,伊斯兰世界更为极端的势力却乘机崛起。同时美国经济依旧疲软,其在世界上的"领导力"也在下降。同期的亚太尤其是东亚经济在中国发展的带动下却高速发展,使得二战后形成的亚太格局发生"失衡"。在这一背景下,美国提出了"亚太再平衡战略",重点是"制衡"中国。这是冷战后美国做出的重大战略调整,也深刻影响着中国的周边国际政治环境和发展。美国的战略调整激化了该地区固有的矛盾,离散了区域合作,也使竞争与依赖并存的中美关系更加复杂化。本文试图通过探究美国"亚太再平衡"战略的背景及动因,分析"再平衡"战略布局及其局限,评估"再平衡"战略对中美关系的影响,探索构建中美"新型大国关系"的可行之道。     

The Trouble With Bibliographies: Where Is Mezhov When You Need Him?

This is a review of twelve bibliographies that reflect the holdings of the Russian collection in Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii focusing on Siberia, the Soviet/Russian Far East, and Russia in Asia and the Pacific, especially Russians in China. The chosen titles represent a mixture of the great, the average, and not-so-good that the author has used over the past four decades. While there is a question about the usefulness of bibliographies in this digital age, most of the old standards should still play a role in academic scholarship.     

2012年1月浙江低温连阴雨的背景场与成因分析

利用NCEP/NCAR再分析资料与NOAA资料,分析了2012年1月浙江低温连阴雨雪天气的背景场与相关成因。结果表明：大尺度环流异常是本次低温连阴雨天气的主要背景场：北极涛动较弱且在1月中下旬出现转折;乌拉尔山高压脊偏强并向极地伸展;西太平洋副热带高压较常年偏西偏强,保证冷暖空气在浙江上空交汇从而导致低温连阴雨的发生;中低层水汽通量场对连阴雨有较好的指示作用;低空能量锋区的变化与连阴雨过程也是基本同步的。拉尼娜事件的发展对我国冬季低温有显著的前期效应;北太平洋海温持续偏高有利于东亚冬季风偏强。
