An Introduction to Intercultural Communication: Identities in a Global Community (6th Edition)

By covering underrepresented areas in the world, Al Jazeera English (AJE) can facilitate intercultural understanding among Americans. However, AJE is not widely available on television in the United States. Further, many Americans hold pre-formed suspicions of the channel. Through an online experiment, we find that pre-reception audience bias against AJE exists and correlates with prejudice against Arab Americans, limiting its conciliatory potential. However, Americans can change their views toward AJE depending on how it is covered by other media, or what we call “intermedia framing,” including both satiric soft news and hard news. An experiment finds that satiric news coverage decreases anti-Arab American prejudice and, when combined with exposure to AJE, elevates evaluations of the network.

Motivation of software developers in Open Source projects: an Internet-based survey of contributors to the Linux kernel

The motives of 141 contributors to a large Open Source Software (OSS) project (the Linux kernel) was explored with an Internet-based questionnaire study. Measured factors were both derived from discussions within the Linux community as well as from models from social sciences. Participants’ engagement was particularly determined by their identification as a Linux developer, by pragmatic motives to improve own software, and by their tolerance of time investments. Moreover, some of the software development was accomplished by teams. Activities in these teams were particularly determined by participants’ evaluation of the team goals as well as by their perceived indispensability and self-efficacy.     

2007—2013年中国科技期刊主要计量指标统计分析

【目的】研究中国科技期刊近年发展状况。【方法】 依据2008—2014年版《中国科技期刊引证报告（扩刊版）》数据,研究了中国科技期刊主要计量指标均值的变化,并与前人研究核心期刊2008—2013年主要计量指标均值变化的部分结果进行了对比。【结果】 表明扩刊版刊均海外论文比、总被引频次和机构分布数增幅较大,而影响因子、他引率、作者数和地区分布数总体变化不大。部分指标增长趋势不稳定,如影响因子、海外论文比、即年指标和基金论文比在2010年达到次高后有较大幅度下降。与核心期刊主要均值指标变化相比,影响因子、即年指标两者增速相差不大,而扩刊来源文献量增长速度要远高于核心期刊,中国新增发表的科技论文绝大部分发表在非核心期刊。【结论】 中国科技期刊整体在向前发展,对于海外作者的吸引力也越来越大,但其发展的质量不高。     

Classroom observation as an instrument for school development: School principals’ perspectives on its relevance and problems

Classroom observation can have diagnostic, evaluative and counseling purposes and can be regarded as a traditional instrument for the processes that are planned for school development. However, the evaluative character of classroom observation can also be interpreted as a controlling measure and therefore, lead to stress and fear in the observed individuals. This might bring about resistance against the feedback which results from classroom observation. In order to be able to focus on the useful aspects and the benefits of classroom observation, it is important to understand which factors make the instruments of classroom observation credible and reliable for the teachers who are being observed. It is central to our current topic to understand the specific criticism concerning the area of teaching and learning within a school inspection and to work out the factors which contribute to the credibility of classroom observations on one hand, and the factors which reduce it on the other hand. For this purpose, we analyzed the statements of fifty school principals on classroom observation taken from overall interviews concerning the expectations of those principals towards school inspections in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The results clearly indicate that classroom observation is a critical process for teachers. Not being able to observe the classroom credibly can have several negative effects. Therefore, this research concentrates on ways that can improve the credibility of classroom observation.
