ABSTRACT British translator and publisher of Russian technical literature Eugene Gros, evidently of Czech origin, collected over two thousand titles published in the Soviet Union from approximately 1945 to 1965. These books are now at Texas A&M University library, which introduced the books into the OCLC online union catalog from Library of Congress catalog cards while updating name entries, series, subject headings, and classification numbers. Publishers, notable authors, and titles in the Gros collection are surveyed, proceeding from power, mechanical and civil engineering, metallurgy and defense (e.g., aerospace and electrical engineering) to Academy of Sciences and popular publications on science and technology. Book title imagery and style are another perspective on the collection. 相似文献

SUMMARY Ariel files are the starting point for electronic delivery of interlibrary loan articles through ILLiad, Virginia Tech's interlibrary loan system. Despite some advantages to electronic delivery of articles to their desktops, a large majority of ILL customers continue to prefer print on paper delivery rather than electronic delivery. This fact has implications for introducing additional electronic services. Correctly choosing what services to impose on library customers, and what services to offer as value-added options, is fundamental to maintaining the credibility of libraries during these times of rapid change. 相似文献

Academic libraries have a long tradition of endorsing and creating written collection development policies to communicate, both internally and externally, their dynamic collection practices. As revealed by a literature search, academic libraries, over time, appear to have abandoned this practice. This article documents how Texas A&M University Libraries embraced the ambitious task of resurrecting written collection development policies and, as part of this process, assessed the current state of collection development, systematically planned for future collection growth, and identified emerging fields of research requiring additional collection support. This process also undertook the integration of collection development into the organizational culture of the libraries. Reflecting on this process, the authors present the case for creating and maintaining written collection development policies in academic libraries. 相似文献

College students wrote summaries of eight short passages as a test of their ability to identify important information. After pairing naive summaries according to length and original passage, those summaries which judges identified as “better” were found to contain significantly more of the major semantic roles, such as Agent and Instrument, than did summaries judged “not as good.” It was also found that students wrote significantly better summaries when instructed to base the summaries on the major semantic roles within the passage. These summaries were significantly better than summaries based upon the traditional paragraph analysis of “topics” and “main ideas,” and they were significantly better than summaries written without any special instructions. 相似文献

Utilizing data from a survey of 1000 households in Rawalpindi, this study presents estimates of the rate of return to schooling and differences in these rates of return by schooling level and sector of employment. The major finding reported is that the rate of return to schooling in one of Pakistan's major urban areas is low, both in relation to the rate of return on physical capital and in relation to the rates of return to schooling in other developing countries. These low rates of return appear to be a result of a conscious government policy which drastically compressed the skill-wage structure. 相似文献

An efficient procedure for signal representation, based on known signal properties, is presented. The representation minimizes the maximum of the ratio of the error and the signal norm, the per cent error. Signal classes are specified by normalized quadratic functionals.
