Impact of public and private research funding on scientific production: The case of nanotechnology

This article measures the impact of public grants, private contracts and collaboration on the scientific production of Canadian nanotechnology academics. The paper estimates a time-related model of the impact of academic research financing and network structure on the research output of individual academics measured by the number of papers. Results suggest that the effect of individual public funding follows a J-shaped curve. Although contracts have no effects, the impact of patenting follows an inverted-U shaped curve. In addition, a strong central position in the past collaborative network has a positive effect on research output.

Interracial Couples’ Conflict Styles on Educational Issues

This study reports results of a quantitative survey of interracial couples’ conflict styles on one specific issue—education. Interracial couples answered a slightly revised version of Putnam-Wilson's Organizational Communication Conflict Instrument to assess conflict styles in dealing with education. The paper has three research questions: Do men and women score differently on self-reported use of conflict styles when dealing with educational issues? Does age or race predict self-reported conflict style for husbands when they deal with educational issues? and Does age or race predict self-reported conflict style for wives dealing with educational issues? A difference on control emerged between husbands and wives, with the latter showing more control-oriented behavior compared to the former. Wives’ age and race were not related to control, non-confrontation, or solution. Husbands who are Asian or Latino were more likely to exercise control. Older husbands’ responses reflected that they were more likely to display solution-oriented behaviors over control-oriented ones.

This study was designed to investigate the cross‐cultural similarity of vocational interests as measured by the Strong Interest Inventory. An Icelandic version of the SII was administered to Icelandic college students studying medicine, business, library science, geology, biology, psychology, theology, and nursing. 290 first year students were tested, and 123 students approaching final exams of whom 80 were re‐tested two years later. Reliability coefficients for the scales (occupational themes, interests, occupations and the special scales) varied from 0.79 to 0.89. On the basis of the US norms 74‐83 percent of students were correctly classified into their actual professional group. The results indicate that US norms are valid for Icelandic college students and allow for satisfying prediction of educational and vocational choice. This may indicate that the US norms of the SII could be applicable for other Nordic college students. SII scale scores for all groups indicate identical interest structure for Icelandic and US groups of the same field of study.
