Perceptions of the school self-evaluation process: the case of Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has initiated educational change and school improvements. As part of the school reform agenda, ADEC has introduced school self-evaluation-Irtiqaa (SSE-Irtiqaa). This research probes the effectiveness of school administrators (SAs), including principals, vice principals, academic principals, and heads of faculty, and their perceptions of the implications and implementation of SSE-Irtiqaa. The study also intends to improve school quality and help benchmark Abu Dhabi public schools with international academic standards, by tracing challenges faced during the SSE-Irtiqaa process. Public SAs are the participants of this study. This research is an exploratory case study that employed a qualitative research tool. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 14 administrators representing 6 public schools in Abu Dhabi. Findings and recommendations shed light on the areas and paths of development required to facilitate and improve the SSE-Irtiqaa process.     

Li1xNaxV3O8电极在硫酸锂-水-乙醇体系中的电化学性能

A series of Lil-xNaxV3O8 materials was prepared by solution reaction followed by calcination method and their electrochemical performances in 2 M LieSOa-water-ethanol solution as negative electrodes for aqueous electrolyte lithium ion battery were studied and compared each other. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that partially substituting sodium for lithium in LiV3Os could increase the interlayer distances of （100） plane. Cyclic voltammetric experiments have demonstrated that the Li^＋ insertion and extraction kinetics of Li0.7Na0.3V3O8 is superior to that of LiV3O8. Charge/discharge results showed that the discharge specific capacity of Li0.7Na0.3V3O8 electrode is higher than that of LiV3O8 electrode.

School Management Teams’ Instructional Leadership Role in Closing the Achievement Gap in Impoverished Schools

Abstract

Although the South African government has made numerous strides in addressing equity and social justice in education, significant inequalities still exist in learner performance, especially in many impoverished schools. One of the reasons cited for poor learner achievement is the ineffective leadership role of school management teams (SMTs). This article reports on a study that explored the instructional leadership role of SMTs of public schools with the view to closing the achievement gap in poor performing schools. To gain better insights into the SMTs’ realities and experiences of their work as curriculum leaders, qualitative research located within the interpretivist paradigm was undertaken. The findings revealed that SMTs of impoverished schools exhibit consistently low to moderate instructional leadership competencies which ultimately affect student learning. In order to close the achievement gap in poor performing schools, SMTs should play a more pronounced instructional leadership role by leading and managing core curriculum matters and educational resources effectively and efficiently.
