Money as Relational Struggle: Communicatively Negotiating Cultural Discourses in Romantic Relationships

Using the lens of Relational Dialectics Theory, this study sought to uncover how competing U.S. cultural financial discourses are negotiated in people’s everyday conversations with their romantic partner. The investigation uncovered that in multiple and varied ways, participants understood money to be a major source of tension in their romantic relationships. One overarching discursive struggle animated participants’ financial talk with their partners: “money is everything” versus “money isn’t everything.” Within this struggle, participants communicatively negotiated the cultural value of money in an attempt to marginalize its power and potential negative influences on relational and economic well-being. Although money is critical in helping people meet their basic needs, this study suggests that deemphasizing the importance of money as all-consuming and omnipotent has the potential to alter couples’ financial and relational well-being.

“Love Doesn’t Just Happen…”: Parent-Child Communication About Marriage

This study takes an exploratory, qualitative approach to examine the communication between parents and their children on the topic of marriage. Two research questions guide this study regarding what messages newlyweds recall receiving from their parents about marriage and how accurate the newlyweds perceive these messages to be. An inductive theme analysis revealed several meanings of marriage were transmitted from parent to child: Marriage means a lifelong commitment, marriage means work, and traditional values of marriage. Largely, these meanings of marriage were perceived to be accurate by the newlyweds.     

Teacher–student contact: Exploring a basic but complicated concept

Contact is fundamental to teacher–student relationships, but empirical studies or theoretical frameworks on teacher–student contact are rare. This article describes a theoretical and empirical exploration aimed at building such a framework. In two studies using classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students, we found interesting features of teacher–student contact. We conclude that contact is a very personal experience, in which teachers' ideals and core values play a central role. Using frameworks from other fields, we were able to define teacher–student contact as a two-way interactive process, in which both participants influence each other's cognitive, emotional, motivational and behavioral responses.

互联网影响着社会生活的诸多方面,由于网络道德规范和法律机制的不健全,网络虚拟性和匿名性的特征容易产生人际信任危机,影响网络中的社会活动。本文通过文献分析,对网络人际信任研究涉及的领域、研究方法、主要成果等进行了梳理和分析,并对研究中存在的一些问题进行了探讨,最后针对研究现状提出未来研究的一些启示。     

"视界融合"中的生命之流--中国20世纪新文学现代品格的动态考察

本文将中国新文学看成是新文化的生命之流,并运用“视界融合”的阐释学观点,从本体特征、阐释形态与当下语境对新文学的生命系统进行了动态考察。论文认为,由于生命观具有本源性、容涵性、开放性和超越性的特点,因而便于克服中国新文学研究中长期存在的二元对立的思维模式,形成多元共生、交融开放的视野。文章对新世纪到来前后几年间新文学研究的多种观点和建构进行了辨析,并提出了自己对新文学作为生命系统的建构和看法。     

Interpersonal communication motives and message design logic: exploring their interaction on perceptions of competence

Message design logic and interpersonal communication motives were conjointly studied to assess their interaction on receivers' perceptions of senders' competence. Two 8 (motive)×3 (message design logic) repeated measures ANOVAs indicated significant interaction effects for both effectiveness and appropriateness. Nevertheless, the effects of design logic and motive on perceptions of competence were not as expected for some situations. The results of the study fail to support past research suggesting that perceived effectiveness and appropriateness will be enhanced by using a more complex message design. In addition, no pattern emerged for the instrumental versus the ritualistic motivations in terms of the most competent message design.     

Adverse childhood experiences and shame- and guilt-proneness: Examining the mediating roles of interpersonal problems in a community sample

BackgroundAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked with an increased tendency to experience self-conscious emotions (i.e., shame- and guilt-proneness). Further, interpersonal problems have been associated with ACEs and are implicated in the maintenance of shameand guilt-proneness.ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to better understand the interpersonal pathways through which ACEs are associated with shame- and guilt-proneness.MethodA community sample (N = 249) completed measures of ACEs, interpersonal problems, and shame- and guilt-proneness.ResultsInterpersonal problems mediated the association between ACEs and shame-proneness and ACEs and guilt-proneness. Multiple mediation models revealed that—when controlling for the other types of interpersonal problems—(a) interpersonal sensitivity was the only significant mediator between ACEs and shame-proneness and (b) interpersonal sensitivity and interpersonal aggression mediated the association between ACEs and guiltproneness.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the importance of interpersonal pathways in the association between shame- and guilt-proneness. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
