A Question of Trousers: Seafarers,Masculinity and Empire in the Shaping of British Male Dress,c. 1600–1800

Trousers have a history. The British-imperial biography of this garment reveals the significance of ready-made clothing production for naval and merchant administrations with global reach. This history demonstrates the significance of male sartorial experiments in colonial settings. And it also confirms the rising importance of imperial and maritime cultures in shaping masculine ideals and habits of dress. Ultimately, middle ranked and elite male Britons came to rethink their allegiance to breeches and hose, a mnemonic of the ancien régime. Social cross-dressing ensued, with men of higher status adopting the garb of nautical working men, at a time when mariners were increasingly esteemed. The study of trousers opens new vantage points from which to assess the forces altering British masculinity, forces that also reshaped material norms.

The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is the largest royal commission in Australia’s history and one of the largest public inquiries into institutional child abuse internationally. With an investment from the Australian government of half a billion dollars, it examined how institutions with a responsibility for children, both historically and in the present, have responded to allegations of child sexual abuse. Announced in the wake of previous Australian and international inquiries, public scandals and lobbying by survivor groups, its establishment reflected increasing recognition of the often lifelong and intergenerational damage caused by childhood sexual abuse and a strong political commitment to improving child safety and wellbeing in Australia. This article outlines the background, key features and innovations of this landmark public inquiry, focusing in particular on its extensive research program. It considers its international significance and also serves as an introduction to this special edition on the Australian Royal Commission, exploring its implications for better understanding institutional child sexual abuse and its impacts, and for making institutions safer places for children in the future.

著名的英国皇家学会（TheRoyalSociety）是迄今为止全世界最古老而又从未间断过的科学组织,现已具有英国科学院的职能。而皇家学会在它的发展早期与当今的科学社团在许多方面都有相同之处,如成员结构、活动内容与形式,甚至面ll当的困难和问题以及所采取的应对措施都与今天的科学社团很相似,然而英国皇家学会却走了那么久远,发展得那么壮大。由此可见,英国皇家学会所表现的内在精神、产生的各种机制体制、应对问题的重大举措等对于当今的科学社团来说都具有深刻的启示和借鉴参考作用。     

‘An ambitious club on a small scale’: the rise of the Royal Isle of Wight Golf Club 1882–1914

In this article, the notable, but forgotten, history of the Royal Isle of Wight Golf Club (RIWGC), founded in 1882, is used to examine the cultural and social shifts that enabled the development of the sport's popularity across late Victorian and Edwardian society in Britain. The club can justifiably be described as notable because for a brief period this small island club was at the centre of developments which helped shape golf during this era and framed its development in the twentieth century. Two archetypally entrepreneurial Victorian gentlemen, Captain Jack Eaton and Charles John Jacobs, were central to the club's success and their endeavours underpinned the club's illustrious status. This paper examines newspaper records, periodicals and local archives to explain how the RIWGC originated and then prospered in tandem with the development of the Isle of Wight as an upmarket holiday destination. Moreover the article shows how the club provided access for both sexes of the English upper middle class to a sport and an environment that delivered the cultural benefits and the social kudos which could be derived from association with a golf club, and particularly one that was one of a select group of ‘Royal’ golf clubs. However, research also demonstrates that the club provided an environment where enterprising and talented men from less privileged backgrounds could seize the opportunity to become famous on the national and even the international stage. Finally it will demonstrate that the RIWGC had a significant role in codifying the rules of golf in the 1880s when the R&A appeared hesitant to take the lead.

何国宗的生平与成就

清初西方科学技术随着众多传教士的涌入而大量引进。朝廷及社会中的有识之士积极引进、消化、吸收并试图与中国传统科学技术相融合。何国宗生于天文世家,能够在精通中国传统科学技术的同时,较早的接触并学习西方先进的科学技术。在这一时期何国宗参与了历书的编写和地图测绘工作,与传教士开展了长期深入的合作。还参与制定了许多可行的水利工程治理方案,减轻了水灾对百姓的造成的损失。作为中国传统的科学家,他在书法上也有极高的造诣。在生活中,他乐于与别人分享自己的研究成果,被广为称赞。通过对何国宗全方位的研究,对于我们认识当时的中国科学家是一个很好的案例。     

康熙年间的大地测量

清代康熙年间(1708—1718)在全国进行了空前规模的大地测量，测定了630个经纬点，绘制了名的全国地图——《皇舆全览图》。在测量中已发现纬度越高的地点，予午线每一度的直线距离越短，首次用测量方法证明地球为扁圆形。
