The Impact of Congenital Deafblindness on the Struggle to Symbolism

Most children who are congenitally deafblind are severely delayed in their communication development and many will not achieve symbolic understanding and expression. This article discusses developmental markers cited in the research literature as predictive of or facilitative of the development of symbolism. These markers include the growth toward more abstract representations, the rate of intentional communication, joint attention to objects and others, achievement of abstract play, consonantal and interactive vocalisations, distal gesture, varied early vocabulary and categories, use of varied cues for recall, object permanence, 1:1 correspondence, cause–effect, discrimination skills, and imitation. The impact of congenital deafblindness on the achievement of these milestones is presented, along with compensatory strategies to support the child’s development.

An Analysis of Symbolism in The Unicorn in the Garden

The Unicorn in the Garden,written by James Thurber,is an ironic short story.It is believed that this short story can be considered as a representative of the war between men and women.The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the use of symbolism in this short novel and therefore reveal the indifferent relationship and marital conflict between the husband and the wife.By the interpretation of the symbolic meanings of several images,this thesis will explore the humor,theme,as well as the characters of the husband and the wife.

Usage of Symbolism in The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald, the famous American novelist in the 20th century, is known as the spokesman and laureate of the ＂Jazz Age＂American, whose works give us an accurate picture of the American twenties： the prosperity of economy and the moral absence. Written in 1925, The Great Gatsby is one of the great literary documents of Fitzgerald＇s period, which wins many favorable praises. Fitzgerald has adopted plenty of symbols to reflect the theme of the times and the value of America in his outstanding representative works, and this thesis tries to analyze their symbolic meaning and significance.     

Learning from Their Mistakes: Glimpses of symbolic functioning in two-and-a-half to three-year-old children

In this cross-sectional study done in the United States, 19 female and 17 male children ( N =36) ranging in age from 30- to 36-months ( M =33 months, 8 days) were presented with two different search and retrieval type problems to solve. Examination of the data revealed clear age-related differences between children who fluidly and efficiently problem solve using symbolically mediated knowledge and those who do not. Younger children tended to rely on a trial and error, motor-based strategy for solving the problems presented, whereas older children consistently used symbolic strategies. This conclusion supports findings from other similar studies. Further analyses of the data, however, revealed an interesting phenomenon in the form of a patterned, non-random error. This error pattern, a perseverative-type error, and the other problem-solving strategies used by the two-year-olds and young threes in this study offer insight into how young children become efficient users of symbols. Facilitating the development of symbolic problem solving in young children is discussed.
