Students encountering race and negotiating friendships,sexuality and language on campus

By drawing on a theoretical framing based on the geography of encounters, this article examines how students give meaning to racialised encounters on campus. These encounters are mediated by long established notions of difference based on power inequalities where race remains a powerful source of difference. However, race is not simply enacted but produced as it weaves through student friendships, heterosexual partnering and through language. By focusing on the construction of race in student encounters on campus, the article uncovers the points at which students produce relations of inequalities, their contestations and the continuities in racialised power structures. The article concludes by pointing to the value in understanding the race-friendship-heterosexual-language tension, which might help work towards understanding and addressing inequalities based on locally relevant interventions on campus.

Education in the United States: Is it a Black Problem?

This review offers a critical analysis of John Ogbu’s Black American Students in an Affluent Suburb: A study of academic disengagement. In his study, Ogbu explains the Black-White achievement gap as one born from the cultural attitudes held by Black middle-class students toward academics. Despite Ogbu's intent to further the scholarly discussion on this issue, the study falls short and is itself replete with limitations. Ogbu’s utilization of a deficit-oriented modality and an unsound methodology, coupled with his failure to critically analyze the interplay of identity formation, culture, and history, together severely restrict the study’s scope and utility. * This paper is a revised version of article (Doi:) which appeared online July 7, 2006. Schools as racial spaces: understanding and resisting structural racism

Analyzing schools as racial spaces can help researchers examine the role of teachers in the perpetuation of structural racism in schools. Based on ethnographic and autoethnographic work, this article offers examples of schools as racial spaces, spaces where whiteness controlled access. It also highlights four teachers who pursued racial equity in their teaching, and how a structural understanding of race was key to their efforts. It makes the argument that racial spaces analysis can help researchers work with teachers to understand structural racism and to better counter it in school practices.
