Professional learning and development needs of women teachers in the Republic of Pakistan: a social realist perspective

ABSTRACT

This article, emerging from a wider study on the professional development needs of women teachers working in Catholic convent schools in the Republic of Pakistan, explores the perspectives and experiences of school leaders and Principals who developed professional development programmes. This area, which has been under-researched in the professional development literature, addresses the complexities and contradictions that the glocalisation of professional development can create for women teachers in developing world contexts. A social realist approach, using Archer’s morphogenetic framework, was employed to facilitate an exploration of the varied responses that professional development needs produce. The responses of former Principals and school leaders and their efforts to provide professional development for women teachers was captured, and revealed different agential responses. These responses included an acceptance of the realities of the education system in Pakistan and the role of women in that context, a desire to follow the ethos of the Catholic religious Order which was at variance with accepted educational praxis, and the changing expectations of society within Pakistan with reference to education of children.

职业女性是后现代社会语境中发展成熟起来的新的女性形象，职业女性不仅开启了妇女解放历史上的新篇章，而且营造了女性主义文学中的新形象。本吝分析了当前文学对职业女性生存状态的反映以及职业女性的躯体化写作倾向，并从两性文化的角度反思了女性主义文学的发展方向。     

走出"目光的樊篱"--论中国女性和中国电影的话语与身份书写

女性主义理论认为女性在男权中心的社会中遭遇"话语霸权".中国进入90年代以来"后殖民文化"的提出,提醒人们关注西方的"文化霸权"和东方文化后殖民化的"受虐"."文化霸权"和"话语霸权"是性别问题与民族问题在不经意之间所产生的异质同构的关系.本文以中国女性导演和中国电影作为平行切入点,既审视既往中国电影和文化中的性别书写,也关注中国电影的文化走向,认为处于双重焦虑下的中国女性与中国电影应主动走出"目光的樊篱",使女性拥有话语的权力、中国电影重新书写自己的文化身份.     

城镇女性失业问题及对策

促进就业 ,解决下岗职工再就业 ,是十六大的重要战略措施之一。而城镇失业女性是下岗职工的主体。女性失业 ,不利于自身的生存和发展 ,亦引发一系列社会问题。解决女性失业是一项复杂艰巨的社会工程。本文提出如下对策 :提升第三产业 ,转变就业观念 ,强化支持系统 ,完善社会保障     

Inventing and commemorating Queen Elizabeth School,Ilorin, in Nigeria (1956–2016)

ABSTRACT

This article explores the establishment of Queen Elizabeth School (QES), the first government secondary school for girls in Northern Nigeria in 1956, and commemorations in 1961, 1981 and 2016. Connecting past and present, several invented traditions were deployed to socialise students, secure QES’s reputation and status, and foster national unity among Nigeria’s diverse peoples. In 1961, British Woman Education Officer Kathleen Player, the foundation principal, highlighted QES’s alignment with the traditions of the British Public school and its commitment to ‘unity in diversity’ following Nigeria’s independence in 1960. She was honoured during QES’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 1981, and new traditions promoted institutional and national loyalties. However, the 2016 commemoration coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of Sir Ahmado Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria (1954–1966). In this context, Player’s legacy and the colonial past were marginalised in favour of Bello as founder of QES and symbol of national unity.
