In the Shadow of the World Trade Center

Abstract

The attack on the World Trade Center occurred less than a quarter of a mile from Pace University in Lower Manhattan. This paper represents a compilation of the recollection of the events of September 11, 2001, and its aftermath from the four senior staff members of the Counseling Center. Our purpose is to share our experiences and perspectives of these events from the point of view of the closest university to the attack. We will also share some of the ways in which we coped as a staff, how we helped the larger community to cope, and some ofthe lessons we learned from both a professional and personal point of view.

David Letterman,his audience,his jokes,and their relationship

The present study analyzes the humor of David Letterman from a balance theory perspective. From this perspective it is predicted that the relationship of the audience to the subject of the joke will influence the amount of audience response to that joke. Significant ANOVA and follow‐up Duncan multiple range test results support the hypothesis and are interpreted in terms of the relational balance theory perspective.     

An Analysis of the Relative Influences of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Presidential Debate Viewing on Shifting Confidence in President George W. Bush

This study analyzes the influence of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 in coordination with presidential debate viewing on the outcome variable of confidence in George W. Bush's policy positions. In addition, the combined influence of these competing persuasive appeals is assessed across three political ideology groups: liberals, moderates, and conservatives. There is a statistically significant experimental stimulus-by-political ideology interaction, with Bush making substantial gains among political moderates who viewed Moore's film prior to a Bush-Kerry debate. The study also reveals similar patterns of influence for liberals and conservatives.     

September 11 and the failures of American intellectuals

This essay critiques the main responses to 9/11 by US intellectuals and analyzes how these reactions reinforced a determined ignorance of the consequences of US economic, foreign, and military policy and a further depoliticization of the culture in general. As a class, faculty have the resources—material and intellectual—to make a serious contribution to progressive political and social change in the world. They need to start putting those resources to work.     

夏大豆提取蛋白质的组分及其亚基组构成变异分析

选取在山东省济宁地区大豆产区曾经或正在生产上推广使用的35个品种为供试品种．采用SDS-PAGE电泳技术测定提取蛋白质11S组分、7s组分、亚基组和亚基的相对含量以及亚基数量．研究其变异特点．在济宁地区同一条件下的结果表明：（1）1IS和7s组分的亚基总数变异范围为15-23个,平均为18．03个．7s组分亚基数量变异范围为3-7个,平均4．49个,有5个亚基组存在不同程度的缺失．11S组分亚基数量变异范围为11-19个,平均13．54个,没有亚基组缺失现象．（2）7s组分相对含量的变异范围为14．78-27．54％,平均为22．07％;11S组分的变异范围为49．04-63．52％,平均为59．77％．11S／7S比值变异范围为2．12-4．11,平均为2．77．（3）7s组分6个亚基组的相对含量平均为4．38-6．62％,11S组分4个亚基组平均相对含量为7．02-21．72％．（4）7s组分相对含量与11S组分之间有微弱的正相关（r=0．08）,7S组分相对含量与11S／7S比值之间存在极显著的负相关（r=-0．94）．而11S组分相对含量与11S／7S比值之间存在微弱的正相关（r=0．19）．7s的6个亚基组中相邻的2个亚基组之间都存在显著或极显著的负相关（r=-0．38--0．85）．11S组分的相邻亚基组之间存在负相关关系（r=-0．78--0．95）,不相邻的亚基组之间相关关系微弱．     

A Rhetoric of Traumatic Nationalism in the Ground Zero Mosque Controversy

In the summer of 2010, a national controversy erupted suddenly as a majority of Americans protested the building of an Islamic community center near Ground Zero. In this essay, I suggest the so-called “Ground Zero mosque” controversy makes visible the emergence of a rhetoric of traumatic nationalism that articulates suffering to citizenship and reproduces national crisis through a motif of consecration whose upshot is a conservative, bipartisan moralism. An anti-political discourse of victimization masquerading as a memory discourse of righteous sacrifice, traumatic nationalism serves as an alibi that excuses the United States from answering responsibly for the war on terror and prevents critical examination of the state of the union.     

George W. Bush's post-September 11 rhetoric of covenant renewal: upholding the faith of the greatest generation

The appeal of Bush's post-September 11 discourse lies in its similarities with the Puritan rhetoric of covenant renewal by which ministers brought second- and third-generation Puritans into the church. Through this epideictic discourse, Bush implored younger Americans to uphold the national covenant of their “elders,” the World War II generation, through support of the war on terrorism, and he revitalized the faith of the older generation. Bush's covenant renewal rhetoric in the context of September 11 inaugurated him into the presidency. It also explains his predilection for unilateral and/or pre-emptive action and his call for acts of local community service.     

Who says you need to teach reading to 11–13-year-olds?

Research indicates that as students move through the school system, many begin to experience difficulties with reading. With this mind, this study explored current practices and perceptions about reading programmes for 11–13-year-old students in New Zealand schools. The study employed an online survey designed to investigate current reading literacy practices in a sample of New Zealand primary in years 7 and 8. Observations of practice and interviews with literacy leaders, teachers, principals and students were also carried out at five case study schools. The survey indicated that teachers may underestimate the importance of learner engagement and direct teaching strategies. The case studies exemplify the need for good professional development, supportive leadership, effective class management strategies, a positive and engaging learning environment, teachers with a passion for literacy and exemplary and sustained guided reading.
