The impact of cognitive communities on the diffusion of academic knowledge: Evidence from the networks of inventors of a French university

Looking at micro-data on the networks of inventors of a French science university, we investigate whether the kind of cognitive relationships between researchers influences the geography of their collaborations.The hypothesis we test (and confirm empirically) is that academic knowledge diffuses in a restricted geographic area when the connected researchers belong to epistemic communities, whereas communities of practice entail less localised effects. We also show that institutionally mixed research teams do not impede large knowledge diffusion.     

Do University policies make a difference?

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the technical universities have been more successful in facilitating the spillover and commercialization of knowledge. We compare the impact of technical and general universities on the performance of knowledge-based firms. Based on a unique data set consisting of publicly held high technology firms, the empirical evidence suggests that, in fact, firm performance is not influenced by the type of university. Technical universities do not have a differential impact on firm performance from more general universities.

系统功能语法重视语言的社会性、语境、功能的研究,韩礼德是系统功能语法的代表人物,他提出的语言层次、语言的元功能、语言的“盖然性”理论帮助人们深入理解了语言的本质和语言的使用过程。随着系统功能语法的不断发展,该理论逐渐被应用于语言研究的各个领域,其中包括母语教学和第二语言教学。母语为非汉语的少数民族学生需要在大学阶段深入学习国家通用语言,预科阶段的国家通用语教学从20世纪80年代发展之初就在不断学习各语言学流派的思想,旨在全面提高学习者运用国家通用语言的能力。对此,韩礼德的系统功能语法理论有一定的指导意义,值得学习和借鉴。

Supporting students’ assignment writing: what lecturers do in a Master of Education programme

Teachers’ instructional practices surrounding written assignments have been little researched, despite writing remaining the primary means of assessment in higher education, including postgraduate professional development programmes. In this paper, we report a study that explored what a sample of lecturers in a Master of Education programme at an English-medium university in Hong Kong did to support students’ assignment writing. We integrate perspectives provided by the relevant higher education literature, the academic literacies approach and North American rhetorical genre studies to shed light on the findings derived from our analyses of interview and documentary data. We showed that our lecturer participants both engaged in direct instruction on assignment writing and provided indirect support. Our study contributed to the existing literature and raised questions for future research.

Child abuse screening: Implications of the limited predictive power of abuse discriminants from a controlled family study of pediatric social illness

The predictive value of a child abuse screening instrument on unselected populations is illustrated for varying hypothesized levels of child abuse prevalence in order to demonstrate outcome of a hypothetical national screening program. At any level of application, the prediction of false positives and false negatives suggests a low practical utility for an unacceptably high social cost.
