Fire's effect on chloride ingress related durability of concrete structure

This paper describes the effects of fire on durability of reinforced concrete structures, and points out that fire not only damages the chemical composition and physical structure of concrete by high temperature, but also leads to an additional risk due to the generation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) combustion gases. A mathematical model is proposed to calculate chloride ingress profiles in fire damaged concrete, so as to explore the service life prediction of the structure. Rapid Chloride Migration (RCM) test was carried out to determine the chloride diffusion coefficients for the application of the mathematical model. Finally, the detected results of a reported case testified to the validity of the mathematical model.

The role of interactive dialogue in students’ learning of mathematical reasoning: A quantitative multi-method analysis of feedback episodes

Interactive dialogue within feedback episodes is essential for developing primary school students' mathematical reasoning competence. Our goal was to better understand the nature of the associations between observed dialogue, teachers' formative feedback, and students' mathematical reasoning. We applied a two-step approach, first constructing a video-analysis instrument for assessing the quality of interactive dialogues and then combining the interaction data with student and teacher questionnaire data from 804 students in 44 fifth and sixth grade primary school classes. The quality of the observed dialogues predicted class differences in students’ self-efficacy for explaining but not in their reasoning competence, which was predicted by perceived formative feedback.     

对在体育科研中应用数学方法的几个问题的思考

指出了体育科学研究应用数学方法所面临的困难；对应用中存在的5个方面的问题：（1）体育科学的方法论基础较弱；（2）体育理论抽象化程度不高；（3）数学方法应用仍处于数理统计水平；（4）对体育本质的认识还存在不确定性；（5）数学基础理论教育还未跟上，进行了分析。最后，展望了在体育科学研究中应用数学方法的前景。     

把数学建模思想潜移默化于数学教学的认识与实践

对关于数学建模的一般性论述后，着重从定义教学、应用问题的教学、利用数学知识的现实背景三方面，提出了体现数学建模思想的可行性教学案例。探讨了如何寓数学建模思想于数学课堂教学之中的问题。     

Teacher-student relationship and mathematical problem-solving ability: mediating roles of self-efficacy and mathematical anxiety

Abstract

This study investigated the mediating roles of self-efficacy and anxiety on the effects of teacher–student relationship on mathematical problem-solving ability. A total of 1667 fifth graders from central China participated in the large-scale survey. The findings indicated that (1) teacher–student relationship had a direct and positive effect on students’ mathematical problem-solving ability; (2) the positive link between teacher–student relationship and mathematical problem-solving ability was partially mediated through self-efficacy; (3) the teacher–student relationship affected students’ mathematical problem-solving ability through self-efficacy and maths anxiety, but the effect of self-efficacy on mathematical anxiety was smaller. Implications for the importance of teacher–student relationships in education as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.     

A Combinatorics Course with One Goal: Authentic Mathematical Inquiry

Abstract

This article shares an example of a course in Combinatorics, taught at Adelphi University in Fall 2012, designed with a primary goal of engaging students in pursuing mathematics as mathematicians do. The course went beyond usual applications of inquiry-based learning in that students were also charged with the responsibility of posing the mathematical statements that would be examined as part of the course. In this way, students decided what was interesting to study and were responsible for the creation of mathematics within their classroom community.

This article looks at the syllabus policies for the course, describes some of the work that students did as part of the course, and reflects upon the outcomes of the course.
