What are Students Being Taught about Ethics in Public Speaking Textbooks?

Current conceptions of communication and ethics were investigated in the top ten public speaking textbooks in the communication discipline. Content analysis was used to examine eight ethical topic areas within each textbook. Results indicate the textbooks by Lucas, Jaffe, Beebe and Beebe, and Brydon and Scott provide the most overall coverage to ethics. In addition, plagiarism, ethnical listening, honesty, and ethical research are discussed most frequently while freedom of speech, hate words, and codes of ethics are least discussed among the top ten selling public speaking books. Each author references different philosophers, defines ethics, and describes the consequences of cheating in diverse ways. The implications of how ethics is not given the same amount of space in the top ten best-selling public speaking textbooks are discussed.     

Get ‘Real’: Does Practicing Speeches Before an Audience Improve Performance?

Public speaking texts and instructors typically encourage students to practice speeches as a means of managing anxiety and enhancing performance. The effectiveness of various speech practice methods has received little attention. Participants completed the PRCA-24 and PRPSA-34, and indicated the number of times they used a variety of practice methods to prepare for a speech. Upon completing this questionnaire, participants delivered a videotaped speech. Students who practiced their speech before an audience received higher evaluation scores than did students who practiced without an audience. In addition, students who practiced their speech before larger audiences received higher evaluation scores than students who practiced before smaller audiences.     

Investigating talk in challenging classrooms-boys enjoy the power of talk

This article attempts to develop the discussion on speaking and listening by investigating pupil perceptions of lessons involving small group talk. The sample of pupils came from a GCSE group in an all boys comprehensive school in an area of social disadvantage. The author used the pupil evaluations of oral work and some one‐to‐one interviews to draw together and analyse the pupils' thoughts and to discuss the teacher's role in planning for talk.
