The Value of Fiction as Management Training

ABSTRACT

Reading fiction can teach sophisticated management skills. The difference between paraliterary fiction that focuses on escaping reality and literary fiction that analyzes reality is important. All reading can help improve basic literacy including increased comprehension and reading speed. Intermediate skills provide the manager with specific lessons on how to manage. Advanced skills, obtained from reading literary fiction, include empathy, the ability to interpret and create sophisticated texts, and an increased possibility of recognizing the “truth” in any environment. Traditional business publications offer more direct training but often overlook the complexities that the experienced manager will encounter and overemphasize the possibilities for success.

Column Editor’s Note This JLA column will consider issues of education and training for management positions in libraries and other information organizations from the perspectives of both the provider and the recipient. The column will appear in odd-numbered issues of the journal and focus on management education/training at various stages of the individual's career including the effectiveness of these efforts, their content, and the specific challenges of teaching and learning within the field of librarianship. The column will address both theoretical and practical concerns. Prospective authors are invited to submit articles for this column to the editor at aa3805@wayne.edu.

"穿越"这个话题近几年来在东西方的小说和屏幕上屡屡亮相并掀起一阵风潮。国内外对于穿越小说的创作类型、特色、时代背景和意义等都做了相对深入的研究,但在穿越背后所体现的东西方不同心理诉求的论述则相对匮乏。本文从穿越小说所表现的主题入手,分析了东西方穿越小说所传达的不同文化内涵。     

Joining the goblins: fictional narratives and the development of student‐teachers’ reflection on practice in the further education sector

This paper explores ways in which student‐teachers in the Lifelong Learning sector are able to draw on fictionalised accounts of their own teaching practice experiences in order to gain a clearer understanding of their models and expectations of professionalism, and of how they, as individuals, locate their current position within the profession as a community of practice. It argues that the translation of experience into fiction – in this case specifically in the form of fairy tales – can be usefully applied in order to enhance and encourage reflection on practice as part of an action research cycle. Drawing on the evidence gathered, the paper goes on to suggest that student teachers’ main preoccupation at this stage of their development is not so much with meeting ‘standards’ of professionalism as with questions of behaviours and practices that will lead to a sense of belonging and acceptance; and with the need to transform their status, in relation to the profession, from that of outsider to insider.     

Use of Ethnographic Fiction in Social Justice Graduate Counselor Training

Ethnographic fiction is a technique for educating counseling students about the relationship of social justice to counseling practice. Preliminary data indicate it is an effective tool, with counseling students (N= 48) reporting an increased understanding and appreciation of clients’ life experiences from a holistic perspective. Furthermore, students reported that they were more motivated to address social justice issues in counseling.

关于美国当代通俗暴露小说

暴露小说是美国通俗小说中的一支较庞大的流派,它包括法律暴露小说、政治暴露小说、新闻暴露小说、战争暴露小说、军事暴露小说、经济暴露注说、医学暴露小说、宗教暴露小说、言情暴露小说等诸多门类。本文着重介绍美国当代各类暴露小说的主要作家与代表作品。

劳伦斯的小说因性描写而倍受争议。其实,劳伦斯是通过性反映资本主义工业文明对人性的扭曲,企图通过性追求回归自然的人类天性,同时表达了自己以“血性意识”为基础的性理想。劳伦斯小说的性描写和他的性理想也存在着偏颇之处。     

西方日记体小说的形成及其发展走势

日记体小说是与传统小说相对应的一种小说类型。打破传统小说的情节模式,重塑个体与社会的关系,是西方日记体小说形成的主要动因;将小说的公共性与日记的私密性融为一体,从公共表达空间进入私密表达空间,是日记体小说独特的表现手法。得益于这种独到的表现手法,西方日记体小说伴随西方两次文艺运动发展和兴盛,逐渐形成为一个重要的小说种类。
