Investigating the emerging generic features of the blog writing task across three discrete learner groups at a higher education institution

Increasingly universities have supported several innovative flexible learning projects over the past few years, and there exists a small but enthusiastic group of staff who have demonstrated that something is possible. Our task is to suggest additional strategies that can realize some of the strategic goals set for flexible learning over the next few years. This paper is based upon the assumption that a strategic direction has already been chosen and suggests some strategies to ensure practical and realistic outcomes.

Création d'une communauté virtuelle de troisième cycle universitaire: apprentissage de conduites d'évaluation.

Durant plusieurs années un nombre croissant d'universités ont soutenu de nombreux projets innovants d'apprentissage flexible et il existe des groupes restreints mais enthousiastes d'enseignants qui ont démontré que l'on peut faire quelque chose. Notre tâche est de suggérer des stratégies complémentaires qui permettent d'atteindre certains des objectifs fixés pour les apprentissages flexibles dans les prochaines années. Cet article est fondé sur l'hypothèse qu'une direction stratégique a déjà été choisie et suggéré certaines stratégies pour obtenir des résultats pratiques et réalistes.

Erstellen einer virtuellen Gemeinschaft für Absolventen: Lernantrieb durch Einstufung

In zunehmendem Maße haben Universitäten in den letzten Jahren verschiedene innovative Projekte für Flexibles Lernen unterstützt. Es gibt eine kleine aber begeisterte Gruppe von Mitarbeitern, die gezeigt hat, daß auf diesem Gebiet durchaus etwas möglich ist. Unsere Aufgabe ist, zusätzliche Strategien vorzuschlagen, die einige der strategischen Ziele, die für Flexibles Lernen gesetzt sind, in den nächsten Jahren erreichen helfen. Dieses Papier geht von der Annahme aus, daß es schon eine strategische Richtung gibt und schlägt einige Taktiken vor, um praktikable und realistische Resultate sicherzustellen.     

A survey of video game players in a public,urban research university

A survey was conducted in a public, research university located in a large and diverse metropolitan area in the southeastern part of the USA. The purpose of the survey was to determine both the positive and negative personal, educational, social, and work related consequences of playing video games. Nearly two‐thirds of the 203 participants in this study were of Hispanic heritage. A majority of the sample of participants was derived using a school intercept, as opposed to mall intercept, strategy. The remaining participants were obtained using snowball, and convenience sampling techniques. Statistically significant differences between males and females were found in the areas of communication, decision making in daily lives, leadership skills, collaborating, functioning in a team, and giving directions to others. These differences were favorable to males.

Assessing pupils’ skills: implications for research in education

The subject of this article is the structure and evolution of skills developed by pupils at primary level. Starting from an analysis of the panel data provided by the French Ministry of Education, the main object of this paper is an original measurement of skills using structural models. The findings of this research raise two complementary issues. The first issue concerns the cross‐curricular nature of skills suggesting a logic of disciplinary interdependence. The acquisition of a skill may be strongly correlated to the acquisition of other skills belonging to the same subject area or to other subject areas. The notion of a set of skills is used to account for the connections between the different aspects of acquired skills. The second issue concerns the evolution of skills over time. Here the aim will be to identify the kinds of skills that are the most predictive of subsequent educational success. This issue is highly relevant for educational policy‐making. It is hoped that the results presented in this paper will improve one’s understanding of the ways in which schools might provide pupils with the best chances of success in the earliest stages of their educational career.     

Co-Producing Children's Sociality in Parent–Teacher Conferences

The aim of this article is to describe how parents and preschool teachers talk about children's interactional skills in parent–teacher conferences in the Swedish preschool and how this can be related to socialization processes. The analyses show that children's communicative skills, such as turn-taking in conversation and co-operation, are considered as important for both parents and teachers and talked about in terms of trouble or success. Children's skills are often assessed by using chronological age as a parameter. Our analysis suggests that the talk about children's interactional skills may be interpreted in terms of deficiency discourses founded primarily on theories in developmental psychology, and that parents, and particularly the teachers, present themselves as socializing agents with regard to children.     

Accelerating decoding-related skills in poor readers learning a foreign language: a computer-based intervention

The results of Fast ForWord® training on English decoding-related skills were examined. Finnish fifth-grade students were identified as having reading fluency problems and poor skills in English as a foreign language learned at school and were randomly assigned to either a training group (TRG) or a control group. The TRG (n?=?13) received 50?min of daily computer program-based training for a period of approximately 10 weeks. Students in the first control group (n?=?11) received the school’s regular instructional programme. A second control group was composed of 14 average readers. The students’ English skills were examined in pre-test, post-test and follow-up measurements. The TRG students saw an acceleration in decoding-related skills. The educational implications of the results are discussed.     

The effect of gender,deceit orientation and communicator style on macro‐assessments of honesty

Recently, deception research has focused primarily on micro‐analytic methods of lie detection (e.g., eye contact duration, response latency, vocal errors). This study adopted a macro‐assessment approach, where deception detection is based on global evaluations of communication, specifically honesty evaluation based on communicator style. 385 subjects viewed four different videotape segments of individuals participating in a simulated job interview. Two of the individuals were truthful throughout the interview, and two fabricated false information on some questions. Subjects were asked to evaluate or assess the honesty level of these individuals, as well as assess a number of communicator style dimensions. Multiple regression analyses revealed that honesty assessments can be predicted from communication style characterized by high friendliness, attentiveness, and preciseness, and low animated and dramatic styles. Some differences were observed for communicator style predictions of honesty based on liars/truthers, subject gender, target gender, and deceit‐orientation differences. Implications for future research are noted.
