Worn Grooves

Drawing from visual, material and written archival sources, this article critically explores some of the functions, uses and perceived values of recorded sound during the First World War and in its aftermath. An instrument of communication as well as commemoration, the gramophone helped bridge geographical (and, in some cases, cultural) distances between the home front and the rear, providing civilians with the fleeting illusion of presence, proximity, or even sentimental communion with the front. The article analyses (a) the affective and connective, but also propagandist, values of commercial wartime recordings as they circulated between the home and the front, (b) the popular notion of gramophones as regulatory instruments of civilisation, (c) the commemorative exploitations of recorded sound in the interwar period. The article focuses on the British experience, contrasting it with examples drawn from French and German experiences.     

Arts education partnerships: sources of harmony and dissonance with cultural institutions’ collaborative efforts

ABSTRACT

Due to budget constraints, schools in the United States have increasingly turned to community arts organizations for support. School-community arts partnership stakeholders collaborate because of shared missions to provide students with valuable arts learning experiences. Investigations of these initiatives indicate that these partnerships improve arts learning opportunities and increase public support and resources for arts education. However, not much is known about the experiences and perspectives of the arts organizations that participate in these partnerships. Coordinating collective efforts with a multitude of institutions and interests poses challenges. In this study, we examine survey data collected from arts organization administrators who participated in a large-scale school-community arts partnership initiative. We find that these organizations are generally positive about their impacts on students’ educational outcomes, but there is substantial variation in these views. We also find that organizations differ in their levels of support for these collective efforts. Sources of this variation appear to be attributable to organizations’ preexisting resources and extent to which they are established. While this difference in levels of support is potentially inevitable, we find evidence that the operations handled by the “backbone” organization, i.e. the initiative’s facilitators and overseers, can significantly influence organizations’ levels of support for these efforts. Organizations are more likely to support these collaborative efforts when they believe the backbone organization ensures transparency with initiative operations, provides regular, effective communication, and effectively resolves competing priorities.

当今我国处于转型发展的多元化社会过程中，面临着多方面的挑战，我们应从社会发展的价值取向、社会评价尺度等方面综合考虑影响我国社会发展的因素，从而使社会既合规律又合目的地向前发展。     

Converging Higher Education Systems in a Global Setting: the example of France and India

We present a comparative survey between the French and Indian higher education systems. In spite of their respective idiosyncratic features, we show that the two countries have both evolved comprehensively toward a knowledge-based society, in order to ensure the prosperity of their citizens. Secondly, we single out a threefold convergence between the two higher education systems on academic, technological and institutional grounds.     

关于职业教育对经济社会贡献的探讨

职业教育在加快普及高中教育、提高教育年限、提高劳动者素质、促进经济增长、缩小收入差距等方面具有很大贡献.在当前中国加快经济转型进程中,国家应在统筹规划、资源配置、体制保障、机制设计、政策配套方面发挥作用,推动职业教育又好又快发展.     

浅谈风险

随着经济全球化的加速推进和信息化程度的快速提高,世界正在进入一个不同于传统社会的风险社会之中,社会突发性危机的不确定性、不可预见性和迅速扩散性都在日益增强。在发达的现代社会中,财富的社会生产系统地伴随着风险的社会生产;工业社会的财富分配逻辑也向晚期现代性的风险社会的风险分配逻辑转变。     

学习型社会的构建

学习型社会是我国社会今后发展的基本方向。构建我国的学习型社会应遵循一定的基本原则，主要通过建设、完善城市学习型社区和农村学习型社区来实现。
