伏羲炎黄生平事略考

通过对历史典籍、文献的梳理及其所载历点的推算,同时结合出土文物考察（即“三证合一”法）,对中华人文始祖太嗥伏羲、炎帝神农和黄帝轩辕的故里、生卒年代及其主要生平事迹进行了较为详细的考订和论述,再论太R皋伏羲距今七八千年,炎帝神农和黄帝轩辕距今六七千年,并提出了伏羲孕于西洞庭之滨、诞于洪江高庙,炎帝诞于会同连山,黄帝诞于岳阳君山（寿丘）,他们一生的活动和创业均在荆楚黔中等新观点和新认识。     

失而复得：关于美的诞生的一个想象或猜想

人世间有一种东西其价值远远超出我们的想象,它就是＂美＂。美的价值与它曾经失去息息相关———人生最大的喜事幸事和快事就是失而复得。美,在历史上实际走过了一个从＂有＂到＂无＂再到＂有＂的失而复得的辩证过程。在此基础上,才有了艺术和美学的诞生,也就有了美学的历史和逻辑。

《唐诗镜》作者陆时雍生卒年新考

明有二陆时雍,一为浙江桐乡陆时雍,字仲昭,一字昭仲,浙江桐乡县人,崇祯六年（1633年）癸酉贡生,是我国明代嘉靖时期著名的诗歌批评家。《明史》、《清史稿》均无传。一为浙江归安陆时雍,字幼淳,归安人,嘉靖进士。疑此二人事迹相混,文章拟对二人生平进行考证。同时笔者将对《唐诗镜》作者桐乡陆时雍的生卒年进行详考。     

屈原生卒年考证

关于屈原生卒年,目前盛行“生于公元前340年,卒于公元前278年,享年62岁”的郭沫若说,笔者认为有误。笔者从屈原作品中重新推算,得出的结论为：生年为楚宣王二十七年,公元前343年,为戊寅年,卒年为顷襄王二十二年,享年六十六岁。     

The effect of age‐position and sex on academic performance: a study of secondary schools in Cyprus

The present study examined one aspect of the ‘season of birth’ phenomenon, the variations in educational achievement effected by a child's age‐position within the class. Sex differences in achievement were also examined. An analysis based on a sample of nearly 4,000 high school examination results was conducted. The research analysed the Greek language grade, mathematics grade and the overall ‘high school’ grade, obtained by 17+ year old students who graduated at the end of the 1992/93 and 1993/94 academic years. The presence of an age‐position related effect was found, but in contrast to similar research studies the youngest students, in most instances, outperformed the oldest students. Nevertheless, this finding is consistent with research studies related to the age‐position effect when framed within the context of the Cypriot educational policy of promotion by examination. It was found that the youngest‐born pupils in a year group made up the highest percentage of repeating, i.e. non‐promoted students. However, the findings do suggest a need for a re‐evaluation of the nature of the age‐position effect. It was also found that, in general, female students attained significantly higher grades than their male counterparts.     

Date of birth and achievement in GCSE and GCE A‐level

General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations are taken by almost all pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland at age 16 years. General Certificate of Education Advanced level (GCE A‐level) examinations are normally taken by relatively able students at age 18. The effect of month of birth on attainment in these public examinations is investigated through a database which brings together the 1991 GCSE results and the 1993 GCE A‐level results of all candidates born between September 1974 and August 1975. Older pupils perform best at GCSE but not at GCE A‐level. Selection effects on entry to A‐level courses appear to explain why this is the case.     

The Birth of Joseph Gabriel

In this column, a mother shares the story of the birth of her first child. Finally, her husband realizes how fast labor is progressing. Baby Joseph was born less than 2 hours after arrival at the hospital.
