20世纪移民史研究的几个阶段

近些年随着区域社会史研究的兴起,越来越多的学者开始关注移民史这一研究领域。当代社会随着国内大型工程项目的建设,移民问题被更多的学者所重视。古代移民问题的研究,对探索现代移民引起的社会变迁,有着重要的参考价值,具有很强的现实意义。     

Visual methods in researching the arts and inclusion: possibilities and dilemmas

The use of visual methods has become increasingly significant to ethnographic research. The possibilities and challenges I experienced using visual research methods in the school ethnography are examined. This paper explores some of the ethical, practical and methodological issues that arise from the use of video, photographs, pictures and images developed by participants in a UK, Midlands primary school with resident artists, teachers and primary school aged children. The use of visual methods in school ethnographies open up many possibilities and specific issues with regards to the research process. Visual methods offer distinct insight into researching the arts and inclusion.     

Calming the spirit and ensuring super-vivencia: rural Mexican women-centred teaching and learning spaces

The changing social, cultural and economic conditions of transmigrant communities in rural Mexico require that women who stay behind, while their loved ones travel back and forth to the USA, create social relations that ensure their survival. From over five years of ethnographic research, this article explores the healing potential of women-centred teaching and learning spaces. By juxtaposing Ortega y Gasset's notion of vivencia – to live – with hooks' idea of collective healing and drawing on empirical data from Mexican rural women's convivencias (gatherings; coexistence), the author analyses the relationship between the mutual coexistence transpiring in women's gatherings and their survival (super-vivencia).     

The Family Festival Prevention Model: findings from a pilot of a teenage pregnancy prevention programme conceptualised by and for Mexican American communities

Despite an overall reduction in teenage pregnancy rates in the USA, the decrease for young women of Mexican heritage in the USA has been less significant than the decrease for their White and African-American peers. Furthermore, the availability of teenage pregnancy prevention models that are conceptualised specifically for people of Mexican descent is minimal. Using qualitative focus group data that were triangulated against quantitative survey data and collected from 35 young people and their parents, this paper presents findings from the pilot of a teenage pregnancy prevention model designed for and with input from Mexican American young women and men and their parents. Reflecting a favourable and impactful experience for the participants, the findings present implications for future intervention efforts and research.     

THE RISE AND FALL OF AN ETHNIC ADVOCATE AND AMERICAN HUCKSTER

As president of the American Association of Foreign Language Newspapers, Louis N. Hammerling accumulated substantial power over some 800 newspapers in 33 languages. As advertising, public relations and journalism emerged as professions in the 1900s, Hammerling functioned as a translator, advertising agent, public relations man and go-between for ethnic-language newspapers when they flourished. With his trade magazine, The American Leader, he extolled the virtues and hardships of immigrants, and offered editorial proposals for legislative changes. In response to his widespread influence, federal officials called him to testify in 1918 about his First World War-era propaganda for Germany, the USA and alcoholic beverages industries. This historical, biographical case study highlights the potential corruptibility of the boundaries of news, advertising and circulation sides of the media.     

Texts after Community: The Case of Czechs in America

The article discusses the various types of texts produced by the Czech immigrant community in the United States in the nineteenth century. An interesting example is the periodical Hospodá?. The author lists some bibliographies and directories that researchers can consult in order to locate such material, but much of it remains either unknown, difficult to access, or both. Buildings can also be considered texts. He urges librarians, archivists, and scholars of sources to work more with these materials.     

当代中国社会政治冷漠现象的政治文化分析——以目前的移民潮现象为例

公民的政治参与是政治民主的表现形态和政治现代化的一个重要标志。当下中国政治冷漠现象的普遍存在引起了学界的普遍关注,并成为政治学领域的一个重要研究课题。从政治文化的视角对当代中国社会的政治冷漠现象进行分析,将对中国政治民主、政治现代化的构建有着积极的现实意义。     

Nature and profiles of racial prejudice: analyses and educational implications in Secondary School students / Naturaleza y perfiles del prejuicio racial: análisis e implicaciones educativas en alumnos de Educación Secundaria

Abstract

The reduction of racial prejudice is an important challenge of intercultural education. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze racial prejudice, as well as the different profiles and the possible educational implications in secondary school students. A total of 327 third form students completed the scales of blatant and subtle prejudice and also a scale of emotions towards North Africans. The results showed significant levels of subtle prejudice and four profiles of racial prejudice, with a low number of students showing equalitarian tendencies. A multivariate analysis showed significant differences in prejudice depending on social distance as well as the academic level of the participants’ families. Finally, we discuss the results from the perspective of intercultural education and we suggest some lines of intervention in order to promote the integration of students from different cultures.     

Caribbean and Central American women’s feminist inquiry through theater-based action research

Feminist action research interrogates gendered dynamics in the development of a collective consciousness. A group of immigrant Latina women (Latinas) from the Caribbean and Central America employed community-based theater as an instrument to mobilize diverse audiences against discriminatory practices and policies. Based on their theater work, I present two interrelated arguments. First, Latinas’ knowledge construction in multiple arenas counteracts gendered and racialized immigration discourses while leading to fundamental sociocultural transformations. Second, deeper epistemological rigor is needed in feminist action research to uphold Latin American women’s agency while countering pervasive discrimination.
