Elements of a successful capstone course considering the needs of stakeholders

One of the principal objectives of engineering education is to prepare graduates for the practice of engineering in industry. Industry involvement in the educational process can be very helpful in devising programs to meet this objective. Yet, engineering education has a number of other stakeholders including students, faculty, academic administrators, and others. Identifying and meeting the needs and wants of these various stakeholders is essential in developing educational programs and learning activities that are effective and sustainable. Stakeholders in engineering education are identified, including their wants and needs. Alternative approaches to developing a Capstone course, with input from these stakeholders, are proposed and evaluated in light of stakeholder needs and wants. A case study for developing a two-semester senior design capstone course at Brigham Young University is presented. In this example more than 300 industry sponsored, design and build, projects have been completed by cross-functional student teams over more than ten years. Feedback from alumni on the success of this course in meeting desired educational objectives is also presented.

郭秉文活跃于民国早期教育界的年代（1914—1925）,正值近代中国社会转型的关键时期,教育界亦在民国初期形成具有现代性和国际性的“场域”。郭秉文凭借学缘、地缘、业缘等关系网络,借助现代报刊传媒,广泛传播新教育理念,组织新式教育社团,大力推行新教育实践,郭秉文一跃成为民国新教育运动活跃的中心人物之一,他的影响力远非以一校一地所能涵盖得了。同时,他亦是中外教育交流的积极推动者、实践者,成为中国教育在国际舞台上活跃的代言人。他领导塑造的南高东大,成长为二十年代中国高等教育的重镇,与北大一道构成了民国早期中国高等教育“双峰对峙”新景象。1925年郭秉文因东南大学的风潮离开国内教育界,标志着民国自由主义新教育时代的终结,然而他培育的南高学风却及于整个现代中国,影响极为深远。     

Fizz in the Field: Toward a Basis for an Emergent Internet Studies

This article examines the history and future prospects of the formation of Internet studies. It is argued that although a traditional field or disciplinary structure is not yet in place, the current interdisciplinary aggregations may have the makings of institutionalized academic units. Through comparison with the institutionalization of other interdisiciplinary areas of study (primarily that of communication and cultural studies), an argument is made for the need to create a firm intellectual foundation on which an Internet/studies can be built. Such a foundation should not only include sufficient and clear understanding of cognate fields but also include a foregrounding of power (as theoretical construct and practice) as a means of engaging the field in the world.     

Counselor Educator Mothers: A Quantitative Analysis of Job Satisfaction

The authors examined the occupational satisfaction of 107 counselor educator mothers and found that work‐to‐family enrichment, support from colleagues, and number of children under age 6 were significant predictors of occupational satisfaction. These results underscore the importance of policies and programs to increase occupational satisfaction of academic mothers and to support their recruitment and retention.     

Review and discussion: E-learning for academia and industry

This paper presents a high level review and discussion about e-learning and proposes the use of interactive learning as a recommended method for staff training in industry and academia. Interactive learning is focused on the integrated e-learning and face-to-face learning to ensure that the process of learning can stimulate learners' interests, report their progress and have tutors to provide their feedback and guide learners to the expected targets. Learning activities and varieties have been illustrated with discussion about how industry and academia can use interactive learning. Five successful examples of interactive learning to demonstrate the effectiveness of interactive learning. Positive impacts have been reported in RBS, SMEs using SAP, University of Cambridge, University of Greenwich and Leeds Beckett University to support the positive outcomes for learners and trainers. Future directions have been discussed, particularly the use of emerging services can enhance the learning experience and satisfaction for learners and trainers.

作者从房地产专业实训教学的客观情况出发,探讨构建基于特征价格模型的房地产专业产学研数据平台的必要性,提出该数据平台应该具备的具体功能,借助利益相关者理论,分析构建该产学研数据平台的可行性,并提出相应的对策。

Being punk in higher education: subcultural strategies for academic practice

Since its beginnings in the late 1970s, punk culture has been associated with counter-mainstream ideology and anti-institutional antagonism. In particular, formal education has been criticised in punk for sustaining oppressive social and conceptual orders and associated behavioural norms. Drawing on literature and interviews, this paper focuses on the experiences of higher education teachers who self-identify as punks, and considers how they negotiate and reconcile their subcultural and academic identities in their academic practice. The findings reveal that participants’ affiliations with punk subculture give rise to counter-cultural pedagogies in which both the ethics and aesthetics of punk are applied in classroom contexts. Furthermore, the participants draw upon subcultural ethical and epistemological narratives to formulate and rationalise their responses to the state of contemporary UK higher education.     

问题与出路——当前学术期刊的窘境与学术评价改革初论

当前,我国迎来了空前的学术繁荣、学术传播繁荣,在花团锦簇背后其实潜存着巨大的危机。学术期刊面临着来自作者发稿以及期刊评价的巨大压力,期刊的压力其实是作者压力的传导。作者的压力来自只是关注论文数量的评价制度。当前的期刊评价体系有其先进性和合理性,但是,缺陷也很明显,应建立学术共同体评价机制。对现代学术成果欠缺应用评价。学术研究、学术传播应回归为人类服务这个根本使命。学术期刊所折射出的学术界的问题,其实反映了社会问题的严重性,必须从制度设计上加以解决。
