Engaging with ‘English in a Historical Perspective’ Through Analysing Texts

Though there is little in the literature on the teaching of the history of English, criticism of textbooks which over-simplify the story as the rise of the standard variety has been more vocal of late. Meanwhile, some academics have argued for focusing teaching on the analysis of texts. This article reports on a unit/module taught at a British university that makes the analysis of texts central to teaching and assessment. It sets out to demonstrate what can be learned from approaching the subject in this way by presenting composite textual analyses created by the first-named author drawing on the work of his co-authors (five of his final-year undergraduate students). This was for two assignments, one focusing on an Early Modern English text and the other a more contemporary piece. A discussion highlights the benefits of making the analysis of texts central to the unit, and considers practical applications for teachers of the subject in other parts of the world.

苏轼《洞仙歌》杂考

1957年冒广生和毛泽东同志讨论诗词创作时说苏轼的《洞仙歌》词是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》而出。其实，对此问题，从宋至今，众说纷纭，认为苏轼的《洞仙歌》是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》而出，只是其中一说。通过考证可知，苏轼《洞仙歌》不是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》，恰恰相反，是南宋人檗括苏轼《洞仙歌》而成《玉楼春》并假托盂昶著。     

白居易《琵琶行》中的琵琶演奏技法探微

在白居易的《琵琶行》中,诗句"轻拢慢撚抹复挑"涉及了当时琵琶的弹奏方法.它引出了今天学者们观点迥异的解释.全文通过大量史料的分析与比较,得出拢、撚、抹、挑分别是唐代琵琶左手和右手的演奏技法术语:拢与撚,是左手指按弦与揉弦的动作;抹与挑在唐代的四弦琵琶上是右手的拨奏动作.     

英汉隐喻词对比研究

运用英汉对比方法,从英汉物质、制度和心理文化层面,探讨文化对英汉隐喻词的影响。英汉隐喻词的选择因文化重合而相同,因文化冲突而相异。揭示了文化与语言的关系:语言反映文化,文化影响语言。理解语言必须了解文化,了解文化有助于理解语言。     

《仓央嘉措情歌》用词特征分析

本文利用计算机作为分析工具，对流传在藏族地区的第六世达赖喇嘛创作的《仓央嘉措情歌》进行了词频统计和文本搭配索引，并根据计算机的处理结果对《仓央嘉措情歌》的用词特点作出了简要分析。     

Food Fights: Cookbook Rhetorics,Monolithic Constructions of Womanhood,and Field Narratives in Technical Communication

Field narratives that (re)classify technical genres as liberating for women risk supporting the notion that feminism is a completed project in technical communication scholarship. This article suggests that technical communicators reexamine the impact of past approaches to critical engagement at the intersections of gender studies and technical communication; cookbooks provide a material example. The authors illustrate how a feminist approach to cookbooks as technical/cultural artifacts can productively revise field narratives in technical communication.     

Metaphorical images of schooling: beliefs about teaching and learning among prospective teachers from the United States displaying different motivational profiles

This study focused on investigating the types of schooling beliefs (teaching and learning) expressed through metaphorical images by prospective teachers (PTs) from the United States. Participants (N = 215) rated 10 schooling metaphors illustrating the student–school–teacher relationships (i.e. Passenger–Bus–Driver; Student is a passenger, School is a bus and Teacher is a driver). Two main factors, a student-centred and a teacher-centred approach described the key schooling beliefs of PTs. Additionally, differences in PTs’ schooling beliefs across typologies/clusters of PTs were found. Further, qualitative data from interviews illustrated how each cluster specifically expressed their instructional views.
