The relationship of school-based parental involvement with student achievement: a comparison of principal and parent survey reports from PISA 2012

This paper explores parental involvement using principal and parent survey reports to examine whether parents’ involvement in their children’s schools predicts academic achievement. Survey data from principals and parents of seven countries from the PISA 2012 database and hierarchical linear modelling were used to analyse between- and within- school variance in students’ math achievement. Factor analysis of both principal and parent responses revealed three dimensions of parental involvement with schools: parent-initiated involvement, teacher-initiated involvement and parent volunteerism. Principal reports of parent-initiated involvement positively predicted between-school differences in student achievement. Within schools, parent reports of teacher-initiated involvement negatively predicted student achievement. The paper shows the importance of understanding the source of information for survey measures. Information on parental involvement from the parent surveys of the PISA study is suitable for describing within-school variation in student achievement, whereas principal reports can be used to predict variation between schools.     

A review of tourism policy for the 2012 Olympics

This review considers the main tourism policy documents published by the UK Department for Culture, Media & Sport which are explicitly linked with the hosting of the Olympic Games in London in 2012. It reflects on the use of evidence gained from wider events hosting strategies utilized elsewhere, but notes concern about the lack of a coherent marketing theme and the potential to spread the tourism benefits beyond the main event venues. It concludes citing again the oft-noted problem about the links between tourism and wider cultural strategy development.     

A Functional Analysis of the 2007 and 2012 French Presidential Debates

In 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy ran against Segolene Royal for President of France; Sarkozy won. In 2012, Sarkozy was challenged by Francois Hollande; Hollande won. This study applies the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse to the French Presidential debates of 2007 and 2012. In 2007, candidates acclaimed more than they attacked and attacked more than they defended, as predicted. However, in 2012 acclaims were not used more than attacks probably because Sarkozy trailed in polls. Sarkozy and Royal discussed policy more than character. The incumbent in 2007 and 2012 acclaimed more and attacked less than the challengers on past deeds.     

Literacy,Age and Recentness of Education Among Nordic Adults

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between reading literacy and age in an adult population aged 25 to 65 in Nordic countries using PIAAC 2012 data. More specifically, the study examined to what extent variations in the literacy proficiency of adults are explained by age and the recentness of qualifications when variables related to education, occupation, and skill use are controlled. The statistical method was regression analysis. The recentness of education explained only a part of the performance gap between the oldest adults and others. The significance of the length and scope of initial education in developing literacy proficiency overall, is difficult to compensate. There were insignificant differences between the Nordic countries.     

Exploring the domestic relationship between mega-events and destination image: The image impact of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games for the city of London

Contemporarily, the hosting of mega-sport-events (MSEs) is one of several strategies used by cities and governments to bring about improvements in a place’s image and recognition. With that in mind, the overall aim of this study, underpinned by theoretical-methodological social representation theory, was to evaluate the domestic image impact of hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games for the city of London, and in doing so, whether any image-transfer (or co-branding) processes occurred between the place and event. In addition to adding to the emergent body of work aimed at using social representation theory to measure place image, the authors are among the first to employ a matched-sample research approach to measuring the impact of an MSE on the domestic perceptions of the host. Employing an abductive research strategy, a survey was carried out among the domestic English population (n = 156) to identify cognitive and affective image components, in the form of social representations, of London as a city (or its place brand), the Olympics as a MSE, and the 2012 Games as a one-off event. The content and the structure of the pre-and post-event social representations were established (using image elements cited by at least 15% of the respondents), analysed (using hierarchical cluster analysis) and then compared (within- and between items) to determine whether any changes or image transfer occurred. The findings of this research reveal that the pre-event concerns regarding the hosting of the London 2012 Olympics and the potential of the event to negatively impact the city’s pre-established image, were, to a degree, fulfilled. Conversely, from an event perspective, respondents perceived the Olympics as a somewhat successful enterprise.

2012年伦敦奥运会大洋洲和非洲奖牌比较研究

通过对2012年奥运会大洋洲和非洲各代表队获奖数据统计分析,得出大洋洲和非洲地区国家奖牌总数相对上一届有所下降;在非洲获奖代表队比大洋洲多的情况下,大洋洲整体竞技水平比非洲强。基于对奥运会可持续发展存在潜在隐患的考虑,应对大洋洲和非洲两个相对较差的地区竞技水平差异性原因进行分析,进而提升整个奥运会的竞技水平。     

2012伦敦奥运会中外女排接应二传运动员得分手段和效果的研究

采用录像观察、数理统计等方法,对2012伦敦奥运会中外女排接应二传基本情况、得分手段和效果进行分析,结果表明:中国女排接应二传平均年龄正处于竞技排球黄金阶段,身体形态、网上高度及绝对弹跳力方面中国女排接应二传均具有优势。发球上,中外女排接应二传得分均是采用跳飘及上手飘,但得分效果不及交手队;拦网上,得分均是来自拦前排强攻的球;扣球上,快攻是中国女排接应二传得分的主要手段,而交手队主要以前排强攻得分为主,中国女排接应二传的前排强攻得分效果与交手队相比,相对较差。     

对视频分享网站娱乐化倾向的审视与反思——以2012年伦敦奥运会视频为例

随着视频分享网站的大兴其道,这一新的传媒形式也出现了诸多问题。本文从2012年伦敦奥运视频的个案入手,在对相关视频分享网站进行内容分析的基础上,力求揭示中国内地视频分享网站正在加剧媒介的"娱乐至死"倾向。并通过分析其成因,对其可能产生的消解社会主导价值观念、影响受众理性思考能力、弱化媒体公信力、并最终使整个社会文化枯萎,造成政治日趋冷漠化,文化日益浅薄化等诸多负面效应进行了理性的审视和深入的反思。
