The Validity of Global Press Ratings

This study examines year-by-year correlations between Freedom House and Reporters Sans Frontières' (RSF) press freedom scores for countries over a 13-year period (2002–2014). The goal of the study is to test the hypothesis that, further into the age of digital disclosure, as press abuses and harassment of journalists are more widely reported, press freedom ranking systems are gradually becoming more precise and, therefore, correlations between the two indices will strengthen over time. To further assess concurrent validity of the indices, correlations between both indices and scores on the United Nations Human Development Index are also provided. The study also examines changes in the indices' rankings of countries over time within six world regions: the Middle East and North Africa, the Americas, Western Europe, Eastern Europe/Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia. In so doing, this study adds a degree of understanding to the validity of two press freedom indices that are routinely cited in journalistic reportage and trade journals, as well as many scholarly publications. Results suggest that the two organizations' scoring of press freedom has become significantly more correlated in the years 2002–2014, and the primary cause of the increased agreement is that RSF's ratings became substantially more aligned with Freedom House's scores during this period. Both indices' ratings are significantly correlated with countries' United Nations Human Development Index scores.

我国网上书店的链接分析

本文采用链接分析方法,从情报学的链接代表引用和社会学的超链接网络分析两个角度出发,分别采集我国网上书店的链接数量、网页数量、综合排名、内向程度中心度、中介度等数据,对我国网上书店进行实证研究。得出我国网上书店的链数、网页总数与网上书店的排名正相关,内向程度中心度与中介度正相关等结论,并据此提出我国网上书店优化的意见。

南宋临安睦亲坊陈宅书籍铺考略

陈宅书籍铺是南宋临安最重要的书坊之一,其刊刻的古籍世称书棚本,对于传播南宋江湖派诗人的作品做出过不可替代的贡献,在我国出版史和文化史上均产生过重要的影响。陈宅书籍铺的兴衰,也是南宋出版业的历史缩影。但是,围绕着陈宅书籍铺的历史,主要是陈起之陈宅书籍铺和同时人陈思之陈宅书籍铺的位置和相互关系,学界长期存在着较大的分歧和争论。通过考查文献和史籍可知,两家陈宅书籍铺实际同为一家,陈思即陈起之子续芸。陈起父子两代均对南宋时期的出版业和文化传播做出了巨大的贡献。     

基于WAP的网上书店的设计与实现

介绍了一个基于WAP的网上书店的设计与实现。采用WML、JSP设计了可重用的程序模块,用SQL SERVER数据库系统设计了所需的数据库表,构建了功能适用、操作简便、性能稳定的WAP网上书店,最后用Opera浏览器对WAP网站进行了测试。     

The bookstore war on Orchard Road: a study of contemporary sponsors of literacy and ideologies of globalized book retailing in Singapore

Based on a year's worth of fieldwork in Singapore, this article is a case study of the much-publicized ‘bookstore war on Orchard Road’ that pitted Borders' American ‘loosey-goosey’ model of bookselling against Kinokuniya's ‘serious’ Japanese model. It examines the distinctive role that country-of-origin effects play in the cultural practices and perceptions of these two global sponsors of literacy, which have in recent decades rivaled traditional sponsors of literacy such as libraries in guiding individuals on ‘what, when and how’ to read. An analysis of the Orchard Road bookstore war captures some of the competing ideologies of textual practices circulating in Singapore as cosmopolitan print consumers and their professional counterparts express their acceptance and/or rejection of particular bookselling practices. For the professionals, good bookselling involves the promotion of local print cultures. In contrast, the cosmopolitan consumers seldom mentioned this criterion. In fact, many of them were drawn to the ‘globality’ of transnational booksellers. While print professionals clearly favored Kinokuniya's globalization localization practices over Borders, a clear-cut preference did not emerge among cosmopolitan consumers. This study suggests that country-of-origin effects likely informed the way in which print professionals and cosmopolitan consumers perceived Borders and Kinokuniya and the globalization localization strategies of these global sponsors of literacy.     

Epitaph for Szwede Slavic Books

Szwede Slavic Books, the largest Slavic bookstore in the United States, ceased operations in May 2010. However, throughout its operation, the bookstore made an enormous contribution to Slavic culture and Slavic library collections in the United States. In this article, the author introduces the owners, Irena and Jerzy Szwede, and longtime employee Vera Shemelis. Additionally, he discusses the firm, its books, and the special atmosphere of the store.     

Bordering the Civic Imaginary: Alienization,Fence Logic,and the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps

Current figurations of the “immigration problem” in the United States challenge our understanding of the rhetoricity of contemporary bordering practices. The public discourse of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps serves to chart the alienization of undocumented migrants and the enactment of alien abjection on the U.S.–Mexico border. Alienization promises an antidote to majoritarian anxieties regarding national disunity in the form of a shoring-up of cultural boundaries that border-crossing subjects render troublesome. Ultimately, the fence logic engendered by groups such as the Minutemen reveals how struggles over the boundaries of citizenship both enable and limit an affect-charged civic imaginary.
