The association between education and society: The educational struggle for Korean identity in Japan 1945–1948

This study attempts to elucidate the idea that education reflects the contemporary social structure. This inference is focused on the educational struggle for Korean identity led by the Korean Federation in Japan (KFJ) during 1945– 1948. The KFJ disseminated the educational movement for Koreans in Japan (Zainichi). The General Head Quarters (GHQ) suppressed Korean identity education (KIE) and tried to disrupt the activities of the KFJ. KIE was identified and destroyed during the HanShin educational struggle as part of the conflict with the GHQ. However, HanShin movement survived to form the basis for the new start of the Korean educational movement in Japan and has served as the cornerstone of KIE. This case elucidates the ways in which education is strongly associated with the social structure and the status quo.

Finno‐Ugric‐Language Books and Periodicals in the “Soviet Literature in Minor Languages” Collection of the Slavic and Baltic Division of The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library's collection of rare Finno‐Ugric books and periodicals from the Russian Federation date to the early1920s. The unique holdings include materials in the Mari, Komi and Udmurt languages, Estonian, Finnish, and several Finno‐Ugric dialects. These materials are of particular value to linguists, who wish to trace the process of Sovietization on the minority languages of Russia's autonomous regions.     

Russian Archives Online: Present Status and Future Prospects

SUMMARY

Digitization of archival materials and finding aids can potentially become a powerful tool to provide information about and access to archival collections. This paper discusses the status of digitization of archival materials generally and applies this to the specific case of Russian materials. Digitization can offer benefits for both researcher and archivist, by making documents or finding aids available online, limiting the need to travel or handle delicate papers. However, it is an expensive process and much work needs to be done to ensure protection of intellectual property rights.     

Russia and the Low Countries: An International Bibliography 1500–2000

Abstract

The single most difficult situation publishers have faced since the depression and hyperinflation of 1991-1993 was the financial crisis which began on August 17, 1998. Prior to August 17, Russian publishers were on track to produce a record number of titles. After August 17, production plummeted. Yet by March of 1999 the industry was reviving, and as of May production had returned roughly to pre-cri-sis levels. The August crisis was a severe test for the publishing industry, but the rapid recovery demonstrates its vitality. The authors discuss monographs primarily, but serials are also included. They also explain why caution is necessary when using official Russian publishing statistics since 1991 and how such statistics can still be useful.     

Personal Papers of Russian Émigrés in the United States in the State Archive of the Russian Federation

SUMMARY

This article discusses the repatriation of émigré archives to the Russian Federation and the significance of this phenomenon in Russian cultural life. Particular attention is paid to six archival collections acquired by the State Archive of the Russian Federation in the 1990s.

Learning in and from the West: international students and international women’s organisations in the interwar period

This article explores the importance of higher education to international women’s organisations such as the International Federation of University Women, the International Council of Women, the International Alliance of Women and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and asks how studying abroad contributed to the international cooperation and understanding promoted by these organisations in the interwar period. In particular, it assesses how the movement of ‘Eastern’ women, especially East Asian, to the West for educational purposes at the beginning of the twentieth century benefited the expansion of these organisations beyond Europe, North America and white settler countries such as Australia and New Zealand between the world wars, and to what extent the experiences of international students in the ‘West’ influenced their political activities back home and their involvement in international women’s organisations.     

Role Underplayed: Research on the Weakening Function of the All-China Sports Federation from a Historical Perspective

The All-China Sports Federation (ACSF) is a national sports organization in People's Republic of China (PRC), which oversees a wide array of sports associations in the country. After a transient independent management, the ACSF was taken over by the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission (SPCSC), and became all but a shadow federation with its systematic and mechanical power centralized, and its function waning. The influence of the ACSF has not been strengthened until now, which is the main reason why the institutional reform of sport in PRC is somewhat slow. Literature review, logic analysis and historical approach are adopted in the study. Taking the ACSF as the research object, the study elaborates on its development history, especially on that of its predecessor, preparation stage and establishment, to explore the historical evolvement of its weakening function. The reasons for the functional weakening of the ACSF include four points: with its executive power gradually taken over by the SPCSC as the internal reason, severed relations with the International Olympic Committee as the external reason, proposing and implementing the policy of ‘cutting the tedium to guarantee the priority’ as the policy reason, and the strategy of a state-run sports system as the institutional reason.     

我国体育总会组织体系关系变迁及其改革构想

建国初期,中华全国体育总会建立起了由上到下的垂直管理体系,但随着中华全国体育总会与国家体委关系以及我国社团管理体制的变迁,中华全国体育总会与地方体育总会的关系发生了一系列的变化。运用文献资料、逻辑分析等方法,对体育总会关系变化的历程进行回顾性研究,并提出未来改革的思路。
