The OPAC is Dead: Managing the Virtual Library

Changing trends in library use and management of e-resources were discussed by Jane Burke from ProQuest/Serials Solutions. A paradigm shift in library collections has occurred in which e‐resources are now the major component of new library materials, requiring new ways to manage and display them. The use of e‐resource access and management services was discussed as a helpful tool, along with federated searching. Burke suggested that by spending less time processing print materials and ending bibliographic instruction, more time will be available for librarians to market and manage e-resources, which will be of greater benefit to today's library users.     

"Where Does the Money Go?"

After spending decades automating libraries with proprietary software solutions, the author decided the business model is flawed, resulting in libraries stagnating at a time they should be accelerating. A possible solution exists in open source software solutions and the author outlines the reasons for the explosion of open source software and his move to support the development. The article examines the advantages, disadvantages and misconceptions that exist about open source software and concludes with a call for libraries to examine and form their own conclusions on this exciting new option that is available to their organizations.     

The Impact of the Wilson Multi-Database Access Product on ILL Requests and Current Periodical Use

With the acquisition of the Wilson Multi-Database Access (MDAS) product, the potential for efficient research processes increased the likelihood of a greater impact of interlibrary of a greater impact on interlibrary requests and current periodical usage. To measure this impact, this study was designed to gather data on ILL requests from titles in the three indexes that comprise the MDAS product. Data waz gathered for comparable time periods prior to the installation of MDAS and afterwards. Similar use data was collected for current periodical issues. This study shows that a potentially greater impact was realized.

香港中文大学图书馆电子资源管理的挑战与对策

电子资源管理是现今高校图书馆所面对的极具挑战性工作,香港中文大学的图书馆系统亦不例外。该馆的电子资源数量在2006-2007年度较上年增长了两倍。如何运用现有的人力资源和图书馆集成管理系统,及时让读者使用这些电子资源,已成为该馆的重大挑战。有见及此,该馆在2007年决定把电子期刊的编目工作外包,并采用Innovative公司的电子资源管理系统来解决上述问题。此文的目的,是叙述该馆利用SerialsSolutions公司的服务和Innovative公司的电子资源管理系统来管理与日俱增的电子资源的经验。尽管尚有困难待克服,但通过此文所述的措施,该馆的电子资源管理工作已得到改善。

A Preliminary Investigation into the Adaptive Learning Styles of Business Students

An exploration of the preferred learning styles for over 1,100 business students has yielded an intriguing result. While many previous studies have examined the learning styles in different majors at different universities, these studies have been focused on describing the typical student for that major. This study demonstrates that the preferred learning styles of students may depend more on the course than the major, indicating that students may have adaptive learning styles. Rather than having an innate, consistent preferred learning style, business students adapt their preferred learning style to the subject of the course. Further research is necessary to confirm these exploratory findings.     

Case Study: Pepperdine University Libraries’ Migration to OCLC's WorldShare

In this case study the authors describe Pepperdine University Libraries’ migration to OCLC's WorldShare Management Services. They elaborate on the rationale for the decision, review some of the challenges and lessons encountered along the way, and briefly discuss some effects of the new system on our libraries. The focus is on technical services and systems, and examples of issues encountered during migration are accompanied by screenshot illustrations. The article concludes with a wish list of desired features.
