“I Can Air My Feelings Instead of Eating Them”: Blogging as Social Support for the Morbidly Obese

The morbidly obese, defined as people who are 100 pounds or more overweight, are the fastest growing population among the obese. They often live with health risks, face discrimination, and lack traditional social support. This article explores the use of weight loss blogs by the morbidly obese (N = 50) and argues that blogging provides invaluable computer-mediated social support for them in four ways: (a) it allows for empathy; (b) it ensures accountability to others; (c) it provides venting and advice seeking; and (d) it shares validation of the weight loss experience. Additionally, the article argues that social support scholars must move beyond chat rooms and message boards as media and explore more media-rich environments such as blogging and social networks.     

Creating a departmental culture for communication grants

Extramural funding to support communication research influences and is influenced by the culture of our discipline, universities, and departments. Both the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association have established closer ties to funding agencies and encouraged members' grant writing pursuits through mentorship and convention programs, newsletter columns, and publicity. Universities vary in how much support they have available as infrastructure to assist in the submission and administration of grants. Some institutions facilitate extramural funding endeavors through mentoring programs, university-wide research centers, sharing of indirect costs, and space. Department cultures, too, vary in the resources available to support grants. Departments in many ways have the most direct effects on grant-supporting cultures. In addition to activities indicated for the discipline and university, departments can build a grant culture by recognizing grant writing in their personnel practices, creating systems for rewarding and supporting grant activities, and having policies in place for the many related issues (e.g., release time, indirect cost sharing, research assistants). Finally, the interpersonal culture, whether colleagues recognize and support grants, plays a major role in individual pursuit of, and satisfaction with, seeking extramural funding to support communication research.     

研究生“数字图像处理”课程教学改革研究

近年来数字图像处理技术迅速发展并在各领域广泛应用。为了适应数字图像处理技术的发展趋势,为社会培养出符合时代需求的人才,以大连大学研究生"数字图像处理"课程教学改革为例,论述课程教学改革中遇到的问题和解决办法。以打好理论基础、加强能力培养、有.利长远发展为目标,从教学内容和教学模式两方面改革入手,通过拓宽教学内容、调整教学重点,采取研讨式教学、案例式教学、跨平台教学等切实可行的措施,提升了教学质量,提高了研究生的自主学习能力,使学生在掌握基础理论的同时拓宽了视野,培养了学生基本的科研素养。     

2D-WHT在实时图象处理中的应用

简述2D－WHT的快速算法，提出了基于此算法的实时图象降噪系统；给出了系统的结构框图，软件模拟结果及其物理意义的诠释；最后给出硬件设计框图以及系统应用范围．     

基于RS技术的洪泽湖周边地区遥感影像信息提取

洪泽湖,中国第四大淡水湖,在江苏省西部淮河下游。本次研究的周边地区包括泗洪县、洪泽县、泗阳县、盱眙县,还有淮安市区中的一部分。本文运用遥感和地理信息系统技术,先用研究区的行政区划图对2010年遥感影像进行几何校正,再进行裁减获得洪泽湖周边范围遥感影像信息,为后期洪泽湖周边地区土地利用及生态效应影响等研究提供基础遥感信息源。     

基于改进SVM的新疆北部地区积雪面积反演研究——以天山山区中段为例

积雪面积是融雪径流模型中变量数据输入之一,准确的获取雪盖范围是进行流域尺度融雪水文过程研究的关键,在水资源管理及洪水预报中具有重要意义.本文以天山山区中段为例,利用MODIS数据,提出了结合混合光谱分解的积雪分量及灰度共生矩阵提取的纹理特征的SVM分类方法,对研究区积雪面积信息提取进行了研究.结果表明:通过利用混合光谱分解的积雪分量作为SVM的特征输入,总体分类精度比传统SVM分类结果有了一些提高.同时考虑结合基于灰度共生矩阵提取的纹理特征用于分类中,总体精度比传统SVM方法提高了1.081％,制图精度达到了99.01％.本文提出的分类方法能够适应特征组合之间的非线性关系,从而能提供更多的区域地物空间分布信息,能够调整无样本地表类型地区的积雪面积反演,对今后的融雪水文过程研究有重要意义.     

基于模板法的苹果图像与背景快速分离技术的研究

机器视觉对水果的品质进行检测并实现自动分级时,将水果图像从背芾中分割出来是一项非常重要的预处理步骤。其分割效果的好坏直接关系到后续分级的准确性。现提出一种基于模板法的图像与背蒂分离方法,通过大量的实验证明该方法对苹果与背景的分离是快速且有效的。     

数据挖掘技术在生源质量分析中的应用

通过对各届毕业生生源等特征资料、高考的成绩数据、以及大学各门课的成绩挖掘,提供了一个在教育领域进行合理挖掘的模式。研究了如何把关系数据库的关联规则问题转化为单维、布尔关联规则问题,把关联规则挖掘中的经典算法Apriori算法在实例中进行了具体应用。     

Adaptive multi-feature fusion via cross-entropy normalization for effective image retrieval

Multi-feature fusion has achieved gratifying performance in image retrieval. However, some existing fusion mechanisms would unfortunately make the result worse than expected due to the domain and visual diversity of images. As a result, a burning problem for applying feature fusion mechanism is how to figure out and improve the complementarity of multi-level heterogeneous features. To this end, this paper proposes an adaptive multi-feature fusion method via cross-entropy normalization for effective image retrieval. First, various low-level features (e.g., SIFT) and high-level semantic features based on deep learning are extracted. Under each level of feature representation, the initial similarity scores of the query image w.r.t. the target dataset are calculated. Second, we use an independent reference dataset to approximate the tail of the attained initial similarity score ranking curve by cross-entropy normalization. Then the area under the ranking curve is calculated as the indicator of the merit of corresponding feature (i.e., a smaller area indicates a more suitable feature.). Finally, fusion weights of each feature are assigned adaptively by the statistically elaborated areas. Extensive experiments on three public benchmark datasets have demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve superior performance compared with the existing methods, improving the metrics mAP by relatively 1.04% (for Holidays), 1.22% (for Oxf5k) and the N-S by relatively 0.04 (for UKbench), respectively.
