The Brazilian martial art, capoeira, is popular in many countries outside Brazil, including the UK. Capoeira is generally taught by Brazilians whose livelihood depends on recruiting and retaining enough paying customers to keep their classes economically viable and socially pleasurable for the students. The teachers also have to establish and maintain authority over their students who are young adults with many other ways to spend their time and money. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in three British cities, the ways in which teacher authority is established, challenged and maintained are explored, including claims to authenticity, physical prowess, race, renaming the students, and skill on the dance floor.  相似文献

The student population across world is increasingly reflective of diverse cultures, religions and ethnicities. This rich diversity may become a challenge for educational leaders, teachers, and policy‐makers in the absence of an understanding of diverse sources of knowledge people draw on for directing their beliefs and daily practices. This paper explores the multi‐ethnic context in Britain with a focus on Muslim students in English secondary schools, and argues for drawing on diverse ethnic knowledge sources to inform and enrich approaches towards managing diversity. It discusses the concept of Adab derived from Muslim ethics and philosophy, and debates possible contributions of such conceptual adaptations towards improving educational engagement and performance.  相似文献

In this article, I offer a qualitative study of three spaces created by and for young Muslim women in Toronto, Canada: an after-school drop-in programme for Muslim girls, a Somali women’s group and a Muslim women’s collective. I focus on data gathered from interviews of seven Muslim women in their 20s who created the spaces, which offered refuge from the racism and Islamophobia in Canadian schools and society and from the patriarchal forms of social control in their families and communities. Drawing on feminist and ethnographic approaches to citizenship studies and a critical faith-centred epistemology, I consider how these spaces function as loci for teaching and learning self and community, building communities of resistance and articulating new notions of the political and of citizenship.  相似文献

Islam is currently at the forefront of world news and the publicity it receives does not always reflect the reality which counsellors meet when working with Muslim clients. This paper proposes that in working with Muslim clients it is important to identify and avoid making false assumptions concerning Muslim beliefs, values and practices and in the process and content of counselling, to be acutely aware of issues and practices, which are sensitive, and to work within the boundaries which religious beliefs set. The final section attempts to identify some key areas of training for counsellors working with Muslim clients.This article is based on a talk given at the IAC (International Association for Counselling) Conference in Geneva in April 2003.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article attempts to do three things: the first is an exploration of the ways in which Islam is presented in an essentialist way (with a focus on religious education (RE) in England and Wales), leading to stereotypes and unsubstantiated generalisations that are then embedded in resources and agreed syllabi, secondly, it provides a critique of essentialism, and finally a case is made for the role of hermeneutics in the teaching and learning of Islam. We argue that a hermeneutical approach is a sound way to both conceptualise the phenomenon of Islam and a pedagogical opening to make sense of it, that may help overcome some of the weaknesses of the current ways of teaching about Islam.  相似文献

人类在不同的地域创造了不同的文化,构成了不同的文明区域。古埃及文明、两河流域文明、印度文明、中华文明基本上是以地域为核心的独立文明。希腊—罗马文明虽然直接或间接地吸收了其他文明的一些成果而发展为欧洲文明的基石,但这是一种有限的综合文明。人类文明第一次真正的大融合是在阿拉伯帝国时期出现,并在融合中发展出一种独特的不是纯宗教和民族的阿拉伯—伊斯兰文明。论文对阿拉伯帝国时期人类文明的大交汇大融合作简要阐述,以此凸现阿拉伯—伊斯兰文明的吸收性和包容性,这在文明冲突的今天有一定的现实意义。  相似文献
