Mediated Intercultural Dialectics: Identity Perceptions and Performances in Virtual Worlds

As identity has a profound influence on intercultural communication, we explicate a dialectical perspective to identify multiple relationships between new media and identity perception and performance complexities within the context of multidimensional virtual worlds. These mediated intercultural dialectics include the personal-contextual, static-dynamic and privilege-disadvantage dimensions of avatar representations and interactions.

印度教徒的宗教生活中至今保留着许多仪式,其中与火神祭祀相关的礼仪十分古老,可以追溯到原始的雅利安部落时期,有着十分丰富的宗教学和神话学含义。论文尝试探讨印度火神崇拜的源头及其丰富的内涵,并与其他地区的雅利安宗教遗留略作比较。     

文人诗歌与唐代社会仪式——以敦煌写卷P.3608、P.3252为例

敦煌遗书不仅保存了很多珍贵文学文献,而且记录了一些文人作品在敦煌民俗中被实际应用的生动细节。写卷P.3608、P.3252中即保存着王泠然的《寒食篇》、《夜烧篇》在相关社会仪式中被应用的具体情形。     

Intervention for peer mediation and mother-child interaction: The effects on children’s mediated learning strategies and cognitive modifiability

The effects of intervention for peer mediation and mother-child mediated learning experience (MLE) strategies on children’s MLE strategies and cognitive modifiability (CM) was investigated on a sample of 100 mother–child dyads. CM was examined in domains of executive functions and analogical reasoning. The MLE interactions were analyzed by Observation for Mediated Interaction (OMI) scale. Children of high- and low-mediating mothers were assigned to experimental (n = 49) and control (n = 51) conditions. The experimental group received a peer-mediation program and the control groups received an alternative creativity program. The children (in Grade 3) were assigned as mediators of learners (in Grade 1) and taught them analogical reasoning problems. The peer interaction was videotaped and analyzed by the OMI. All children were given dynamic assessment after the interaction. Children in the experimental group showed higher MLE strategies and CM than did children in the control condition. Mediators of low-MLE mothers in the experimental group showed greater CM than did mediators in the control group. Structural equation modeling analysis showed that mediators’ cognitive modifiability was explained by proximal factors of treatment, mothers’ quality of mediation (QM) and mediators’ QM; learners’ cognitive modifiability was explained by mediators’ QM. The findings were discussed in relation to the MLE theory and earlier findings.     

From the Closet to the Loft: Liminal License and Socio-Sexual Separation in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

Bravo's surprise hit series, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, has attracted a large and loyal viewing audience and garnered a great deal of critical acclaim. Though there is much to celebrate about the show, the authors of this study point out that Queer Eye also represents a new way of containing queers and queer sexuality. This essay argues that this containment is accomplished through a mediated ritual formula that inverts the traditional sequence characteristic of rites of passage and allows queers only temporary and controlled access to the cultural mainstream while ensuring that, in the end, they do not pose any serious threat of socio-sexual contamination by their continued presence there. Further, the authors argue that Queer Eye’s ritual formula illustrates the construction by mainstream media of a new kind of Closet, which they call “the Loft” because of the term's connection to one of the series’ conventions and because this new Closet simultaneously serves to elevate and contain queers and queer sexuality.

南涧盖瓦洒彝族村寨的"哑巴会",在外来文化与本土文化不断交流与融合的过程中,其节日的称谓、仪式功能逐渐发生变化,甚至衍伸出"新传统"。节日习俗的现代变迁,不仅是文化持有者自觉的行为,还是文化持有者与他者文化调试与互动的结果。     

Impression Management in Chat Rooms: A Grounded Theory Model

This paper investigates impression management and misrepresentation in chat rooms (a form of computer‐mediated communication, or CMC) from the vantage point of 10 chat room participants. The grounded theory approach was employed to derive a model firmly rooted in participants’ accounts. The resultant model reveals the motivations for engaging in impression management, the strategies used while in the chat rooms, as well as the goals achieved during this process. To illustrate the model, the experience of 1 chat room user is detailed. By producing a set of relationships among concepts, this study represents chat room participants’ experiences in a meaningful and coherent way. Findings are linked to extant theory and the value of this study is explored.     

Direct and Mediated Intercultural Contact: Koreans' Attitudes toward U.S. Americans

Abstract

Guided by the intergroup contact hypothesis, this study tested two models examining the associations among Korean young adults' consumption of U.S. dramas, direct contact with a U.S. American person, and their attitudes toward U.S. Americans in general. Results demonstrated that personal contact and mediated contact had a positive effect on intergroup attitudes, but that frequency of personal contact was a negative contributor. Mediated contact had different and stronger influences on participants' intergroup attitudes when they did not have personal contact with U.S. Americans. In addition, intergroup anxiety played a significant role in the contact modes and attitudes links.
