Domain Coloring and the Argument Principle

Abstract

The domain-coloring algorithm allows us to visualize complex-valued functions on the plane in a single image—an alternative to before-and-after mapping diagrams. It helps us see when a function is analytic and aids in understanding contour integrals. The culmination of this article is a visual discovery and subsequent proof of the Argument Principle, which relates the count of poles and zeros of a meromorphic function inside a contour to the accumulated change in argument of the function around the contour. Throughout, I offer connections to standard learning goals of courses in complex variables.     

Positive teacher–student relationships go beyond the classroom,problematic ones stay inside

The authors voice teachers' perceptions of their interpersonal experiences with students in both positive and problematic relationships. Interview data from 28 teachers were examined by coding utterances on teacher and student interactions. Results indicate that teachers defined the quality of the relationship mostly by the level of communion (friendly vs. hostile), instead of by the level of agency (in control vs. powerless). Analyses of mentioned teacher and student behavior show a friendly interactional pattern for positive relationships and a hostile pattern for problematic ones. In teachers' perceptions, positive and problematic relationships also differed in context where encounters take place and topic of talk. Contrary to interactions in problematic relationships, encounters in positive relationships were mostly situated outside the classroom context and conversations during these encounters covered a wide range of topics. Implications for teacher education programs are discussed.     

基于投入产出表的鲁粤苏及全国产业结构比较研究

利用山东与广东、江苏和全国的最新一次(2012年)投入产出表,从各产业感应度、影响度以及经济效益指标等多方面进行对比分析,重点研究山东省的产业结构特点和经济效益情况。山东省传统工业产业比重较大,产业间联系相对紧密,传统产业优势明显,但钢铁、有色金属、化工等高耗能、高污染排放产业比重大,产业结构层次较低,随着国家能源和碳排放总量控制以及大气污染治理越来越严格,传统产业增长潜力堪忧。山东省首先应该在传统产业的优化升级上下足功夫,更要在高新技术产业的发展方面加快步伐。山东省的第三产业结构水平整体较低,现代服务业发展缓慢,传统第三产业发展也不够充分。相对而言,第三产业的发展不受制于其他行业,可以加快发展。劳动力成本相对较低是山东省传统产业具有优势的重要条件,随着劳动力市场供求关系的改变,人口红利的消失,山东省传统产业的优势也面临很大挑战。

Can creative destruction be destroyed? Military IR&D and destruction along the value-added chain

We elaborate a supply chain innovation matrix that can be applied to both commercial and military supply chains. By shifting the analysis from a focal firm to industry structure, we argue that the market structure of the entire supply chain functions as a major moderating variable in determining both the timing and adoption of innovations, both for commercial and military markets. We extend work on supply chain resource dependency by drawing a distinction between market-structure-induced resource dependency and supplier over-reliance on a customer in a competitive market. This has policy implications for the organization of military industrial research and development (IR&D). Joint service research and development (Jointness) will certainly bring about innovation, but it will be incremental, reinforcing established military hierarchies. Policy makers may need to add this probable consequence when comparing Jointness and inter-service rivalry. The cost savings inherent in Jointness may unwittingly sustain a military force unready for fighting the next war.     

Reporting from the Frontline

This paper focuses on the war correspondents traveling in the Balkans during the period of the Balkan Wars (1912–1913) to cover military campaigns. It tries to explore the paths of information, the mechanisms of propaganda and the restrictions used by the Balkan states to control the content of the news transmitted. The Balkan Wars were among the first military events covered so extensively by newspapers all around the world. In the battle-fields the principles of the new field of journalism were highly tested. The lessons learnt in the Balkans during the Balkan Wars proved to be productive and useful for the improvement of the relationship between war correspondents and military authorities.     

美国内战前的童工问题

内战前,童工劳动在美国是一个很普遍的社会现象。童工成为许多新建工厂的重要劳动力,人数一度占到工厂工人的1/3左右;整体雇佣多子女家庭是许多工厂主乐意采用的策略,1830年前后,这种做法在许多地方相当盛行。童工的大量使用与当时的劳动力缺乏、童工劳动力价格低廉以及清教徒劳动观念的影响等因素密切相关。童工的工作环境和生活状况非常恶劣,通常是日出而作,日落而息,而且人身自由还受到严格的限制。随着童工问题的日益严重,限制使用童工劳动的呼声也不断高涨。     

产业共性技术与行业协会的组织匹配——以温州为例

产业共性技术属于准公共产品,“市场失灵”会导致其供给不足,政府的介入无可避免,但如果政府的作用仅限于补贴（或税收减免）,供给又将面,瞄“组织失灵”。为此,在产业共性技术面临市场和组织“双重失灵”原因的基础上,基于行业协会的比较优势,提出产业共性技术与行业协会组织的匹配问题及作用机理,并以温州的实践加以佐证。     

温州市高职专业结构与区域产业结构的对接研究

服务区域经济社会发展,是高职院校办学定位的要求。通过研究发现,温州市高职专业结构与区域产业结构发展大体相适应,与第二产业对接尚不够充分,与支柱产业未能很好地匹配。温州市高职专业结构应以产业结构为依据,调整高职专业结构与招生数量,优先发展对接支柱产业的专业,促进高职专业结构更好地适应区域产业结构。
