Mumford on aesthetic–moral interaction in sport

Stephen Mumford argues that aesthetic and moral values in sport are interdependent, focusing on cases where immorality taints beautiful performance. This interdependence thesis is insightful but, I argue, in need of refinement, as its normative implications are unclear and perhaps implausible (e.g. the Nazi aesthetics problem). I also challenge Mumford’s perspective on the infamous Dynamo Kiev death match. Whereas Mumford claims that the match’s morally oppressive circumstances detract from it so that ‘it was not something knowingly we should have admired aesthetically’, I argue that, on the contrary, and in light of what Mumford says about other cases, such circumstances actually enhance the game’s aesthetics such that it would be wrong not to appreciate it aesthetically.     

Long-term endurance training increases serum cathepsin S and decreases IL-6 and hsCRP levels

Cathepsin S (CS) was shown to play a key role in cancer progression, atherosclerosis, heart valve disease, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. The present prospective study aimed to investigate the influence of sports on CS, interleukin-6 (Il-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels.

Ninety-eight of 109 participants completed the study. Ergometries were performed at baseline and after 8 months to evaluate/quantify the performance gain. Blood samples were taken at baseline and every 2 months. CS was measured by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Compared to the control group (mean performance gain ?3.41 ± 4.62%) we observed a significant physical-activity-induced increase of CS levels (3.45–3.73 ng · ml^?1; P = 0.027) and a significant decrease of Il-6 (2.43–1.91 pg · ml^?1; P = 0.031) and hsCRP-levels (0.11–0.09 mg · dl^?1; P = 0.001) in the intervention group (mean performance gain: 12.13 ± 6.32%). Furthermore, the tendency of the progression was significant for CS and Il-6 (P = 0.002/0.033).

We could show a significant sports-induced decrease of the classic inflammation parameters hsCRP/Il-6, probably expressing a downregulation of permanently prevalent inflammation processes. Simultaneously CS levels increased significantly. Our results show that increasing CS amounts are not simply to equal with an enhanced inflammation status and might even have beneficial effects on inflammation and angiogenesis.     

The De Kretser case: a note on Sri Lankan writing in English

Abstract

How is the content of a literary canon, or tradition to be configured? What counts as a literary archive? More than 25 years after Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978 Said, W. Edward. 1978. Orientalism, New York: Vintage.  [Google Scholar]), it seems reasonable to assume, that central to such traditions, would be the work of those who live and work in the society that gives rise to it. In this review, such a location of Michele de Kretser’s new novel, The Hamilton Case, is offered, as a caution to metropolitan literary critics who continue to approach Sri Lankan writing in English, as Christopher Columbus approached ‘America’. It is argued that the novel owes much to, and can be read as echoing and elaborating the detective fiction of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, who was, also, the fourth Prime Minister of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 1956–59.

美国赛事及场馆设施外部效应研究现状及其启示

采用文献资料法就美国关于赛事及场馆设施外部效应的研究现状进行了梳理,认为赛事及体育场馆设施并不能给所在城市带来较大的正外部经济效应,但可为其带来城市自豪感等无形效应;政府资助球队体育场馆设施建设的费用应主要由使用者和受益者负担.在与我国赛事及体育场馆设施的外部效应研究现状进行简单比较与及差异分析的基础上,提出当前我国应加强对赛事及场馆设施外部效应的研究.     

185nm紫外光/氧化协同降解水体中微量三氯甲烷的研究

文章研究了185nm紫外光/氧化协同降解水体中微量三氯甲烷的降解情况,考察了溶液浓度、光解时间、溶液pH值以及加入氧化剂等对降解三氯甲烷的影响,研究结果表明,CHCl3的脱氯基本是由185nm紫外光引起;其脱氯率几乎不受pH值的影响;在近中性条件下,5mg.L-1的三氯甲烷水溶液的CODMn去除率、脱氯率均与光解时间呈指数上升;光解5min后,CODMn去除率可达50%左右,脱氯率则小于30%;CHCl3的解离主要是185nm光子的作用,而与其它氧化性物质无关。

通过对美国爱达荷州新近颁布的体育教师标准的分析与归纳，阐述了美国基础体育教育人才培养和管理的专业标准以及基础体育教育领域的新思想、新观念，以求对我国在基础体育教育人才培养方面的科学决策和管理有所启示。     

奥林匹克品牌的法律保护及中、美、澳三国间的比较

奥林匹克品牌由于存在上的无形性，相对于有形资产来说，构成侵犯的可能性较多，必须通过一定的法律来保护。国际奥委会通过《内罗毕公约》、商标注册、版权保护、举办国相关法律规定和赛场清洁政策等方式对奥林匹克品牌加以保护。美国奥委会通过各项法律、法规规范各组织与个体的行为，形成了较为完善的法律保护体系。澳大利亚作为奥林匹克知识产权立法的第一个国家，出台了《奥林匹克五环及标记保护法案》等一系列法律法规，在体育产业中建立了完善而有效的品牌保护计划。中国政府和体育组织充分利用立法、行政、司法和宣传手段，针对中国市场上奥林匹克品牌侵权行为的不同形式，加大了对侵权者的惩罚力度。     

从两蒋日记赴美谈起

“2004年12月，蒋氏家人决定把两蒋日记‘暂存’于胡佛研究所并授权其保存、开放。这是目前最完整的两蒋日记原始手稿。蒋介石日记从1917年到1973年。即蒋离世前两年；蒋经国日记从1937年到1979年，时至台湾民主化之前。”2006年4月27日，《南方周末》做此新闻报道，章并称：“今年2月，胡佛研究所对外正式宣布接受蒋家委托，保管两蒋日记。台湾政界及学界普遍感到震惊。台湾总统府国史馆馆长张炎宪大为惊愕，‘国史馆是法定的物管理机构，不能容忍两蒋日记流往海外’。”而相对于台湾政界学界，胡佛研究所研究员郭岱君——该所近代中国档案及特藏馆的负责人之一则不以为然，她认为两蒋日记属私人物品，蒋氏后人有权做出选择。日记为“暂存”，其核心是两蒋日记暂存胡佛50年，且蒋家可随时撤回。作为蒋氏日记的保有蒋方智怡（蒋孝勇遗孀）的回应则是：“我一直为这些历史件寻找适当的保存地点，最重要的考量因素是档案保存能力及学术环境的公正与否。”
