Through the looking glass: Ethnic and generational patterns of immigrant identity

Traditional theories of the “looking glass self” and “social mirroring” assume that people's views of their own group reflect the societal view. Crocker and colleagues (Crocker, J., Luhtanen, R., Blaine, B., & Brodnax, S. (1994). Collective self-esteem and psychological well-being among white, black, and Asian college students. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 20, 503–513), however, found ethnic group differences in the extent to which private and public views correspond. We report data from two studies that further examine this correspondence in (a) a sample of first- and second-generation Black immigrants and (b) samples of first- and second-generation Asian/Pacific Islander, Black, Latino, and White immigrants. Study 1 shows significant shifts for Black immigrants, from a high correlation between public and private regard in the first generation to a non-significant relationship in the second generation. Study 2 replicates the findings for the Black sample and shows different patterns of association for the other three groups. It also shows that endorsement of multiculturalism moderates the relationship between public and private regard among first generation Black and Latino immigrants. We discuss these results in terms of managing the negative value associated with one's group in society and consider immigration as a site for studying social change.

Analysis of activities included in Saudi Arabian chemistry textbooks for the inclusion of argumentation-driven inquiry skills

This research aimed to determine the extent to which twelfth-grade chemistry textbooks and workbooks included argumentation-driven inquiry skills in their activities. For this purpose, all activities found in the twelfth grade chemistry textbooks and workbooks were analyzed using an analysis rubric. Results indicate that the inclusion of the argumentation-driven inquiry skills in the analyzed chemistry activities generally fell within argumentation-driven inquiry levels one and two. This type of inclusion favors teacher-centered learning and teaching rather than student-centered learning and teaching. Therefore, the authors recommend that these textbooks and workbooks be revised to ensure that the argumentation-driven inquiry skills that are included are directed toward student-centered learning and teaching as required by levels four and three.     

Embedding Multiple Literacies into STEM Curricula

In fall 2012, an interdisciplinary team of science, English, and library faculty embedded reading, writing, and information literacy strategies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricula as a first step in improving student learning and retention in science courses and aligning them with the Next Generation Science and Common Core State Standards. The authors present their reading, writing, and information literacy contributions, explaining the importance of introducing these concepts and strategies into science courses.
