What is novel about the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is not a radical departure. It is an incremental evolution. Previous virtual worlds, like Second Life, have laid the groundwork for the development of the Metaverse by providing valuable insights into virtual environments and social interactions. Studies of these earlier platforms contribute to a more nuanced understanding of what the Metaverse is, and what it is not. Based on studies of virtual worlds and by applying inductive processes of reflection and abstraction, we propose a framework that supports the identification of attributes that help differentiate the Metaverse from previous virtual worlds from a user experience perspective. We demonstrate the value of the framework by comparing the Metaverse to Second Life. Our framework and comparative analysis ground the current discussions about the Metaverse deeper in the established discourse on virtual worlds. They also shed light on the potential impact of the Metaverse, the special role of its immersiveness and help us to identify lessons learned that can inform the Metaverse's further development.

Crime Reporters at Work: Investigating the Underworld in Wartime Leeds, 1944-45

ABSTRACT

Crime news was a media staple throughout the twentieth century. What Britons read, heard and watched shaped public understanding of crime, prompted police inquiries and initiated legislation. While we know much about the content of crime news and something of its reception, we know little about its production. This article addresses this known unknown. Using a unique police investigation into press reports of black marketeering and corruption in wartime Leeds, it reveals the investigative methods reporters used and the rules under which they operated.     

后二青会时代对太原市城市品牌塑造的影响研究

2019年山西承办二青会是塑造太原市城市品牌的重要契机。本文运用文献资料法、比较分析法梳理城市品牌的内涵,提出城市品牌要素包括城市有形资产、无形资产、经济发展水平、产品质量与服务、文化底蕴5个要素。通过分析二青会筹备期间与太原市城市品牌要素的互动,建议后二青会时代需通过优化城市有形资产、保护赛事无形资产、丰富城市文化内涵的路径来塑造太原市城市品牌。并指出政府相关部门要防范风险,规避后二青会时代的消极影响,包括财政负担过重、城市生态环境的破坏、居民的生活幸福感下降。     

Dating relationships of the Turkish second generation in Europe: Patterns,partner origin and the role of parents

Research on the union formation of the children of immigrants, the so-called second generation, focusses primarily on marriage and cohabitation. Even though dating relationships are often the first romantic relations and lay the foundation for more committed relationships, very little is known about dating among second-generation young adults. This is unfortunate because dating across different origin groups may point to changing or shifting group boundaries, that may only later be reflected in interethnic marriages. In this paper we aim to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the dating behavior of Turkish second-generation young adults in five European countries (the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France) using the comparative TIES survey data. Our results show that it is common for the Turkish second generation to date a partner with a non-Turkish background. And, moreover, that it is important to distinguish between different types of intra-ethnic partnerships. Although only few parents are reported not to approve of the relationship of their child, a substantial part of the second generation seems reluctant to inform their parents about their dating life. With regard to the role of parents, it seems that their influence on the origin of dating partners is limited. In order to enhance our understanding of the meaning of (intergroup-) dating, its determinants and outcomes, future data may focus more on meeting places and the role of peers in a longitudinal way. We argue that dating is an important indicator for intergroup relations that deserves further attention in increasingly diverse societies.

国民党政府对日处置政策的出发点是惩罚日本侵略,使之不再构成对中国的威胁,为此在许多问题上,提出了自己的主张,并努力使之付诸实施,某种程度上体现出顺应历史潮流、维护整个中华民族利益的色彩,应该予以肯定。但不久,由于自身地位的变化,社会基础的削弱,为保住其摇摇欲坠的政权和法统地位妥协、退让,最后放弃对日处置政策,出卖中华民族利益,虽然有其受当时的国际国内政治环境制约的因素,但其自身有着不可推卸的历史责任。这不仅对中国、日本,而且对亚太地区的政治、经济和国际关系都产生重大影响。     

课外语言环境对留学生汉语习得的作用和影响

课外语言环境由交际性语言环境和非交际性语言环境构成,交际性语言环境有着丰富具体的语言情境,非交际性语言环境对汉语学习也有自身的优势,教师和教学管理者对此应予以高度重视。课外语言环境对留学生汉语习得有重要作用,但其中存在的不利因素也应引起我们的注意。留学生管理者和教师应充分利用其中有利于汉语习得的积极因素,消除不利因素的影响,更有效地促进留学生的汉语习得。     

‘It’s in the Blood,isn’t it?’ The Contested Status of First World War Veterans in Second World War Civil Defence

This article examines how ex-servicemen’s memories of the First World War shaped their experience of working in civil defence during the Second. In response to ongoing public criticism of civil defence as a whole and a dismissive attitude towards veterans in particular, these men expressed a distinct form of ‘useful masculinity’, rooted in their combat experience and developed within the particular context of civil defence. I will argue that through the group setting in which remembering took place, veterans were able to oppose dominant cultural narratives and to develop and express these alternative narratives about their value.     

Defining Early Modern Automobility

ABSTRACT

Automobility lies at the heart of contemporary analysis of the social relations of mobility. Thus far, however, it lacks a history. This article seeks to rectify that omission by interrogating the road traffic accident crisis which afflicted Manchester in the early years of the Second World War. The article proposes a provisional chronology for automobility in twentieth-century Britain: a lengthy phase between 1920 and 1970, dominated by the interests of private motorists, and a modern sub-period between 1970 and the near present. The latter era witnessed a gradual, and then an increasingly rapid, movement towards meeting the needs of non-drivers.
