Visual and postural control of an arbitrary posture: The handstand

Abstract

The aim of this study was to increase our understanding of postural regulation by analysing an arbitrary posture – the handstand. We assessed the relative influence of peripheral vision and central visual anchoring on the postural balance of gymnasts in the inverted-stand posture. Displacements of the centre of pressure, the angles between the body segments, and the gymnast's height in the handstand were analysed. Postural regulation in the handstand appeared to be organized according to a system similar to that in erect posture, with three articular levels suggesting the existence of a typical organization of human posture. Moreover, both intra-modal (central and peripheral vision) and inter-modal sensory systems (vision and other balance systems) contributed to the postural regulation. The results are interpreted in terms of an ecological approach to posture in which postural regulation can be considered as an emergent phenomenon.

年龄相关性白内障的进展程度对角膜内皮细胞的影响的临床观察

目的观察双眼进程不同的年龄相关性白内障患者角膜内皮细胞密度及形态学变化,探讨白内障进展程度对角膜内皮细胞的影响。方法选取视力一眼≤0．2,另一眼≥0．6年龄相关性白内障患者100例,视力≤0．2眼为A组,视力≥0．6眼为B组,分别对其双眼的角膜内皮细胞密度、细胞大小变异系数（CV）及六角形细胞比例进行检查。结果A组角膜内皮细胞密度2297．65±364．66（cells／mm^2）,变异系数（56．65±7．28）％,六角形细胞比例（35．06±5．45）％;B组角膜内皮细胞密度2570．46±340．25（cells／mm^2）,变异系数（47．59±7．03）％,六角形细胞比例（41．97±5．19）％．A,B两组比较,角膜内皮细胞密度、角膜内皮细胞大小变异系数（CV）及六角形细胞比例差异有显著性（P〈0.05）。结论随着年龄相关性白内障进展程度的加重,患者角膜内皮细胞密度降低、细胞大小变异系数增大、六角形细胞比例减少,显示角膜内皮细胞的损伤凋亡可能与白内障的进展有相关性。     

The role of cognitive competence in the art museum experience

The gap between the potential for works of art in museums to offer unique experiences, and the actual outcomes of visitor encounters, highlights the importance of the cultural competence of museum visitors. However, when applied to museum visiting, cultural competence should be primarily treated as perceptual and cognitive—one needs to exercise the perceptual activities that works of art require in order for a museum visit to register as some form of satisfying experience. The main part of the paper is devoted to discussion of some aspects of the perceptual basis of cultural competence required for perception of works of art—the problem of attention, the misplaced dichotomy of ‘museum viewing’ versus ‘everyday perception’, and the problem of defining the current cognitive style. It is argued that one of the greatest challenges to the museological profession is the problem of how to engage the complex issues of perception, vision and subjective experience more properly in the museological discourse, so that they can be reflected in theories of presentation and interpretation.
