Managing an Academic Reference Department

Abstract

To be an effective academic head of reference in the 21st century will require many of the same characteristics and skills necessary in the 20th century. While the traditional ways of providing reference services are changing, the fundamental need to provide access to information remains, and effective utilization of staff and other resources is paramount. Balancing the increasing pressures from shrinking budgets, growing costs, proliferation of expensive electronic resources, and high expectations from faculty and students creates a greater need for strong management expertise. The head of reference must be both an exceptional manager and an exceptional librarian.

异构电子资源统一检索协议*

大规模分布式异构数据库的互连互检是数据库应用领域急需解决的问题，本文从制定标准化协议入手，提出了一个解决此问题的有效方法。协议分为两个部分，第一部分从分析现有的各种元数据标准和数据库入手，给出了一个标准化检索服务，各个数据库均可依据此标准服务发布统一的检索服务。第二部分对现有的UDDI标准进行了一定的扩展，提出了一种发现和选择信息检索服务的方法。

基于WoS和EI的离子液体文献计量研究

采用Web of Science(WoS)和Engineering Index(EI)获得文献数据,对离子液体相关文献采用文献计量学方法进行了分析研究。利用逻辑斯蒂曲线(Logistic curve)进行数据拟合,获得离子液体文献增长规律;利用布拉德福文献分散定律(Bradford's law of scattering),分析离子液体文献的分布情况。同时分析了离子液体研究地域、文献作者分布情况等。该研究为文献计量学理论与方法在化学化工领域的应用提供一个范例。     

Information navigation on the web by clustering and summarizing query results

We report our experience with a novel approach to interactive information seeking that is grounded in the idea of summarizing query results through automated document clustering. We went through a complete system development and evaluation cycle: designing the algorithms and interface for our prototype, implementing them and testing with human users. Our prototype acted as an intermediate layer between the user and a commercial Internet search engine (AltaVista), thus allowing searches of the significant portion of World Wide Web. In our final evaluation, we processed data from 36 users and concluded that our prototype improved search performance over using the same search engine (AltaVista) directly. We also analyzed effects of various related demographic and task related parameters.
