Mutual Respect and Civic Education

Contemporary theories of civic education frequently appeal to an ideal of mutual respect in the context of ethical, ethical and religious disagreement. This paper critically examines two recently popular criticisms of this ideal. The first, coming from a postmodern direction, charges that the ideal is hypocritical in its effort to be maximally impartial and fair. The second, which I associate with such 'new atheists' as Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, argues that notions of mutual respect pose a threat to such basic goals of education as the cultivation of critical thinking.

Piggy in Lord of the Flies: A“Great Martyr”

Lord of the Flies is generally considered to be the masterpiece of William Golding,one of the most famous writers in the 20thcentury.There are four major characters in Lord of the Flies,Ralph,Jack,Piggy and Simon.Piggy is a character that Golding elaborately designs.However,scholars and critics pay less attention to him.As a matter of fact,Piggy plays an indispensable role in this novel.This thesis analyzes Piggy in Lord of the Flies,which aims at exploring the real reason of his being looked down upon and laughed at as well as his tragedy and deepening readers’understanding of Piggy in this novel.Through the analysis of Piggy,the author of this thesis finds that Piggy is incarnation of science and reason and prey of evil and barbarism.Piggy is a"great martyr",who dies for his scientific and rational beliefs.     

Montage in The Sound and the Fury

Montage is a term in French architecture originally. Visual media borrows it to refer to the pictorial technique in which cut—out illustrations and fragments are re-arranged, producing a new composite picture with several different images. Literary field applies this artistic technique as a vehicle to create works, especially for stream-of-consciousness fiction which flourished in the early 20 thcentury. This article turns to account for the similarity of montage and literature to divide the writing technique into narrative montage and space montage and dissect the montage use in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury which is distinguished by its space-skipping and mixed-expression.     

英国皇家植物邱园在殖民扩张中所起的作用

英国皇家植物邱园位于伦敦西郊,是全英最大的植物园,于1795年由奥古斯塔公主下令建成。在英国18-19世纪殖民扩张蓬勃发展阶段,这里不仅仅供大众游览,同时担负着对海外殖民地植物的科学研究、树种优化、珍稀植物标本保存等科研任务。而对于例如金鸡纳、橡胶树等经济附加值很高的植物,邱园又承担着提高植物产量和输送新品种到其他海外属地的作用,以此发挥其经济功能。所以,殖民扩张时期的邱园对英国产生的作用可以分为三部分,即公共社会服务、植物学研究、提高经济作物价值的作用,这奠定了邱园在英国近代史上的独特历史地位。

向死求生--《我弥留之际》的死亡主题探析

福克纳的小说《我弥留之际》围绕主人公安迪·本德仑的死展开,死亡主题在书中不断重现。通过对书中的死亡主题进行分析,笔者认为福克纳是想通过描写书中人物对死亡的奇特反应,来引起读者对现代社会中人的异化状态和生存困境的关注。

Godard has consistently voiced his disapproval of Spielberg's Schindler's List. Critics have noted this antipathy yet there is currently no detailed analysis of Godard Godard, Jean-Luc and Youssef, Ishaghpour. 2005. Cinema: The Archeology of Film and the Memory of a Century. Trans. JOHN HOWE, New York: Oberg.  [Google Scholar]'s specific objections. This article attempts to remedy this omission. In the first half, the author focuses on the motivation and logic that underpin Spielberg's film, paying particular attention to the qualms expressed in Godard's Éloge de l'amour over the moral and philosophical dubiousness of employing witness testimony as a means of recreating the past in the present. Then, in the second half, the author analyses the politics of identification in a selection of Godard's films to argue that Schindler's List is made ethically palatable for mainstream audiences through the use of manipulative erotic imagery. There, two critiques are brought together to suggest that Godard's primary objection to Schindler's List is that it constitutes an uplifting consideration of the Shoah that precludes a more serious rumination on an event that ruptures the histories of both the cinema and the twentieth century.     

Sonic Sturdiness: The Globalization of “Chinese” Rock and Pop

To theorize further global and regional flows of popular culture, this article provides a critical analysis of “authentic” rock music from Beijing as well as “commercial” pop from Hong Kong. Following Appadurai, I theorize rock as a hard cultural form, which, under the scrutinizing eyes of the West, demands localization when it travels to places outside its perceived homeland, the West. By comparing hardcore punk from Beijing to Cantopop, I discuss whether the soft relates to the hard as pop does to rock. I conclude it does not. The transient, intertextual, and multivocal opaque voice of pop demands a different theorization. I therefore recast Appadurai's hard–soft distinction into a clear–opaque dualism as a more accurate theoretical tool for understanding cultural globalization.

This paper discusses evidence, collected during an ESRC‐funded project (‘Reconstructing a Scottish School of Educational Research, 1925–1950’), of a remarkable vision to involve teachers in educational research in Scotland by the Educational Institute of Scotland in the 1920s through the work of its Research Committee. Led by William Boyd, the Committee thought that involvement in research was a crucial stepping stone towards achieving professional status for teachers. It conducted a number of detailed investigations involving teachers, thereby introducing research into the consciousness and practice of teachers. This paved the way for Scotland to make significant contributions to educational research on the international stage.
